A small male this time. Shouldn’t be too fatty so I might clean it and throw it in the crockpot for the chicken. They’re molting and all so they might appreciate the extra protein.
Feeder outside the run was knocked over this morning, traps have been reset with fresh bait. We'll see what happens in the morning or perhaps over the next few days.
As a side note, the grey squirrels are chewing wires on a trailer that sits near the run. Small game season starts in 4 days and...
Getting pictures of these guys is hard, even harder now that they’ve figured out how to get through the dog fence section of the run. Doesn’t help that mom jumps the fence and encourages them. Luckily the 2 turkey poults have not really tried to go after them.
3 weeks old, looks like the meaty...
More new layers and I’m having a hard time keeping track! A lot of brown all look about the same. I keep missing whoever’s laying the golden green eggs, the mystery olive egg, and a spotted brown egg. I’ve selected 10 pullets to sell and I want to make sure I don’t accidentally get rid of the...
I’ve used the broom stick method several times and it works just fine… usually. I was culling extra cockerels, after I had caught and broke all their necks (all did the typical flopping thing with their head all floppy and clearly internally decapitated) I went inside to get the scalding pot...
I’ve personally have never even seen a rat and I’m outside doing this and that all times of the year. Supposedly my grandpa saw one some years ago but he lives on a lake so there’s that. Luckily we just don’t seem to have rats in our area. For rodents we have a lot of squirrel species (flying...
I hunt and trap in other areas anyways to help the farmers with crop damage from coon, which also saves a lot of future turkey nests and litters of rabbits. Raccoon are fine, I don’t hate them but I also realize they are way over populated so taking out a good number of them doesn’t really...
13 so far today and caught one pullet in the act. Poor girl laid what I assume is a double yolker and it’s almost as big as my best laying hen’s who lays jumbo eggs herself. Pullet egg on the right with a bit of blood on it. In person it looks purplish because of the bloom.
I would probably hold her in the sink or shower and use the spray function and warm water to gently remove as much as you can, gently rubbing with a soft cloth. Use a bit of baby shampoo or similar gentle soap if you must. Be sure to let it dry before applying wound spray (blu kote or similar)...
Keep an eye out for the other birds picking at the new feathers. I was out with my birds today and saw a spot of blood on the ground, apparently someone pulled out one of my frizzle’s new tail feathers. Poor girl can’t catch a break.
Just cull them, it won’t effect the meat one bit so long as these birds have been healthy and happy enough to stay on feed and not lose any weight. There will always be bacteria and whatnot on raw chicken, just make sure it is cooked thoroughly.
I work at a dairy farm and sometimes certain...
Looks like I was wrong about the sapphire sky pullet. Watched her pop out an olive green egg. Right is the black EE X BJG who I though laid brown eggs but seems I was wrong about that too.
The goldish green ones may actually be from the feather legged blue, who I believe is from the grey OE...
Chick starter, game bird feed, meat bird feed etc, anything that has 20% or more protein is what I like to use. You can feed some scrambled eggs, tuna, dog food, the options are limitless so long as it isn’t fatty. I sometimes decide to give them more alternative types of protein. I’ve given...
The problem with all brown layers is even individuals of the same breed will lay vastly different shades. I had 3 black Jersey giants and I could tell their eggs apart easily because they were all a different shade and shape.
I’m also currently trying to figure out who is laying what from my...
