Those are very pretty! I'm sure little purple one would have loved (to munch on) them very much. It reminds me of a photo I found of her from last spring. The poor tree had noticeably fewer blossoms near the ground.
Thank you for keeping her in your thoughts, @Chickeria :hugs
@Veb I'm so sorry for the loss of your Buttercup. The sadness and tears always seem to come in waves. I wish I could say, "we had so many nice memories together" or "she lived such a wonderful life" and leave it at that. But inevitably I come to the realization that there won't be any more new...
Thank you @MixedFlock23 for remembering her with me.
I still can't believe she's gone. I took these two photos just last month. I'm glad that I have them to share. Missing you dearly, Little Purple One.
Thank you all for the kind words.
@AntiqueB @ButtonHoarder it's truly sad and there's no way around that. But she really did have such a personality and a great big heart. In due time I'll celebrate her time here and all the joy she brought wherever she went. I owe her that much. Like you've...
I think you conveyed that beautifully. I'm so glad you saw my post and responded. Your words mean so much :hugs
Loss really is difficult. I think the difficulty is proportionate to the amount of love felt. Maybe that's the good thing about how hard this is. It helps me know just how much love...
Thank you @Chickeria. That means so much... and now the old floodgates are open again. I wish there was an address for that place past the bridge. I would send her so many letters and treats. To her and all of my loved ones who have passed on.
Thanks @BantammChick, she really was beautiful and always with an inquisitive look on her! I'm not too sure what her breed is, but looking up cream legbar, she seems to share some of their attributes.
I should be good at this whole grieving thing by now, but I'm having a really hard time with this one. I'm writing this to help myself cope.
Having lost so many of our feathered friends in the past, we stopped naming them at some point. This hen is known affectionately as the "little purple...
I noticed salpingitis in one of my hens last year. This was before I was aware of the terms "lash egg" and "salpingitis." The kind folks here at BYC helped me figure out what to do. Thanks to them, she managed to survive and is probably near, if not at the top, of the pecking order today.
This...
Neosporin is an antibacterial cream used on wounds. You can probably find something similar that's safe to use. Be careful about which one you use. For example, I've read that "-caine" pain-killer ingredients should be avoided since they can be deadly to chickens.
As for the soak, I'd suggest...
An update for anyone else who comes across similar symptoms-
The hen in the original post is still with us and doing very well! Her one foot is still paralyzed, but she seems to have adapted. She can run short distances and jump onto a 3ft high platform in the coop. She also no longer has any...
Looks like a case of bumblefoot. I've treated many instances successfully, but it requires time and patience. If left untreated, it may result in infection that can travel from the foot to the rest of the body, so it's good you caught it.
There are many methods to treat. Many sources I've come...
Thanks @LaFleche. I also had a lurking suspicion that it was the ascites, but I'm holding out hope that it's manageable.
I've encountered ascites before in other hens, but never such high breathing rate accompanying it. And it doesn't take much for her to pant, just a few ml of water dripped...
Hi BYC, we have a hen who's about 6 years old who's been sick for over two weeks now. I'm hoping someone has some insights as there seems to be several issues going on at once.
In particular, I'd like to know:
1) Whether to start another round of antibiotics / other medication
2) Whether the...
