Thanks for your thoughts, chuckachucka! Was hoping for pullets, but had an inkling they might be cockerels. We'll just have to be patient for those sweet silkies...haha! :D
Thanks, redranger209! Was hoping for at least 1 australorp pullet, but that's what happens in the chicken world! :jumpy We'll just have to wait a bit to figure out those adorable silkies!
Hello Experts! My sister recently got a few chicks: Silkies and Australorps(?). They are 7-8 weeks old. Any guesses on genders? I have an opinion on the Australorps, but I know nothing about Silkies...haha! Thanks for your help!
I tried to look closer, and I don't see anything that looks like broken feathers. I'm hoping she's a molting hen that lays eggs on occasion, like yours! :-)
Thanks, TexasSam! I really hope it's molting. She's just thrown me by continuing to lay eggs. I'm going to up her protein to try to encourage feather growth! I haven't seen any broken feathers, so I guess that's good news against feather picking. :-)
Thanks for the reply, FlyingNunFarm! I'm going to check her for crawlies tonight. She's a bit skittish, so that's the best time to catch her. I did check my RIR for bugs last week and didn't see any, but I'll definitely check again. She has never completely stopped laying eggs, so I don't...
Hi Chicken_Guru! Thanks for the thoughts. She has never stopped laying eggs, so I don't think she's been through a molt. I feed them a lay feed that is 16% protein, but I'm thinking maybe I'll go to the feed store and by a higher protein feed to see if that helps. I do have alfalfa, too, so...
Hello Everyone,
My Easter Egger went bald over the summer, and I'm wondering if my other hen is pecking at her or if it's something else. I only have 2 hens, and they are in coop with more than enough space. She is still laying eggs--about every 2-3 days, so I'm not thinking molting. Let me...
Hello Everyone! These are pictures of my new babies at 9 weeks old: an Easter Egger and a Brahma. I am thinking they are both pullets, but was hoping for confirmation from you...the experts! Thanks!
I think your hen will be fine, you will just have to watch her to see how she takes to the chicks. I have 2 RIRs and one recently went broody, so I put fertilized eggs under her (we had to slip in day old chicks because something went wrong with the eggs...but that's another story). She lived...
Hi GitaBooks! Since you were so good to respond to all my posts, I thought I'd give you an update on Polly. I broke down and took her to the vet and was able to get antibiotics for her. She slowly got better and better, and finally started walking about 8 days after taking her meds. She...
Sorry to reply so late...I've been on vacation! I haven't held them much, since I've been away. My son took care of them and picked them up a few times to get them out of the rain and put them in shelter. I'm hoping to get a hold of them soon...maybe tonight. Better late than never, right?
