Thanx for your advice.
Well I never did use a heat lamp, in the hot climate here we don't need one! I just had one chick die out of 8. Although these days the weather is cooling down a bit. Unfortunately I found the first little chick who was pecked at has died, I don't know if it was due to the...
Hi there folks,
I'm encountering some problems with my month-old chicks. I have 7 chicks in a fairly large enclosure, they have a box and tunnel in there and plenty of room and things to hop on etc. I'm in the middle-east and can't find chicken feed but I feed them daily grains and regularly...
Thanks for your advice! In the end I decided to play it safe, even if it was a bit more work, but I built a separate brooder for the hen so the hen and her chicks will be separate from the other chicks, and everyone seems ok with this arrangement, although it is more work, I had to make another...
Well I am going crazy from rats, in our neighbourhood they're very active at night, mainly because people leave garbage everywhere I reckon. All my neighbours have had problems with rats trying to get into their houses, a few days ago I heard a noise in the kitchen at 5am then peeped my head...
So I have another question, as I'm new to raising chicks (although I have had 1 rooster and 3 hens for about a year now):
Do u think it's a better idea to move in the hen and her eggs in with the chicks in the brooder before the chicks are due to start hatching? Or after 1 has hatched, or after...
Hey Rachel,
Thanks for your advice, yes I think it's a very good idea to leave a big box (with windows) with a hole big enough for the chicks and not big enough for the hen, so the chicks can escape there, I think I'll try that.
Take care!
Hey there folks,
I should be getting some new little chicks within a couple of days. And 2 of my hens are going broody and sitting on eggs, and we decided to let them sit on them till they hatch. My question is: will I be able to put one hen with the hatched chicks in the same big brooder with...
Fellow chicken-fans!
Well, our run and coop is in the middle of being built but I can't make up my mind whether we should use deep pine shavings or sand.
I've been trying to research online and on this forum, and can't find any place which lists the advantages and disadvantages of each. Some...
Thanx for the help.
We can buy cabbage very cheaply, or else a kind of grass they give to goats, I think that might be the easiest solution for them to get greens. But food is another whole problem that I'm about to tackle, here they just feed them grains and there's no commercial feed, so I...
Thanks a lot for your welcome and ur speedy help!
But I made a mistake, it's not concrete, but it's cement, which is not really water-resistant, my hubby thought of using gravel under pine shavings to drain the water and moisture, we do have a a hole for drainage from the roof. What do you...
Hi there!
Well, we're now planning on building a home for our first chickens and I need some advice! I've read Raising Chickens for Dummies and done some research online but still have some questions...
We live in the middle-east by the sea, where it's hot and humid with very rare rainfall...
