Congrats! You're in for a real treat!
Being in Houston you won't have to worry about a lot of the cold issues, right? That's going to be a relief, I'm sure.
I've had such bad luck with people on Craigslist. They want an arm and a leg for what anyone else would call "junk" even though they wouldn't give you a nickel for a diamond ring.
I've found that Tractor Supply is having a really decent sale on welded wire fencing right now. You can get around...
I've had those conversations, too!
I love to laugh about it afterward but I HATE having to grin and bear it when someone starts prattling on with that junk.
Last month it was, "I saw a hawk, therefore, ALL of your chickens are doomed and they will be eaten."
Keep in mind this person has...
We started free-ranging our flock once we got over the initial fear of them dying or any of the insane amount of other bad things we read on this site. We raised them in a bath tub until we felt comfortable and the poor things had to suffer while we slowly learned that chickens don't just DIE...
I didn't read through all of the replies and thought I would just respond to your original concern about Vegans.
Regarding their beliefs or whatever, I used to be Vegan, for almost a decade. I still would be if I didn't eat eggs from my chickens.
The main thing about being Vegan is that...
Nice to meet you! I grew up right near Claremore.
You're in a great area to raise chickens. Lots of green, easy to keep the chickens cool during the summer, and plenty of bugs for them to eat off the ground.
My parents are almost inside of Claremore and I know they have some issues with...
I know how annoying it is to read those comments from "that one A-hole" and I hate to sound like that A-hole, but I have never had a problem with my dogs and my chickens. From the time we got them we used the word "no" in order to let them know what was good, bad, right, and wrong. So far...
I'm sorry to hear about your limping bird! I found that keeping our limping rooster in a small dog kennel/cage thing that we had in a storage shed helped a lot. It prevented him from moving too much but it didn't confine him in a way that was mean or upsetting to him. After a few days he...
*UPDATE*
After about 5 days of keeping our rooster indoors where we could monitor him and keep him in a small enclosure to prevent him from further damaging his leg I'm happy to say that he made a speedy and full recovery!
Turns out the he didn't have Marek's Disease which I'm thankful for...
I talked to my wife about the possibility of raising rabbits but she's not as interested in doing so right now, but if you wouldn't mind I'd love to keep in touch with you about it just in case I can change her mind.
I think the main reason we can't take them right now is because we'll be...
Wow, I should have been more brief and not rambled so much.
To answer your question more clearly, a coop should be large enough to house the chickens and you might consider adding a "run" to it, which would just be an area they could roam around in during the day. You would probably want to...
Great question!
I'll chime in with my little bit of knowledge but I can't wait to see what everyone else has to say.
Personally, predators were my number one priority when it came to the construction, so I built mine a few feet off the ground.
Ventilation is something to keep in mind, too...
I suppose I do!
I kind of want to get some ducks and possibly some geese once we can move onto some land that we can truly call our own.
I think that when it's all said and done we'd like to have:
Goats
Ducks
Geese
Rabbits
Chickens (naturally!)
a few cows and a couple of horses
If, for...
Since I'm fairly new here I didn't know who to contact regarding POOPS this year.
If there is already an event planned that's great. If not, and people would like to get together I am more than happy to do anything I can to help plan the event, and it wouldn't have to be called POOPS, if...
