I agree with not using insulation. I live in Michigan and the winters get VERY cold...last winter we had many days in the low negatives with awful wind chill. My coop is not insulated at all. The hens each put out about 10 watts (if I recall correctly) of heat and huddle together on the roost...
The droppings can be quite large and gooey...they do tend to get stuck in wire. I'm not sure where you're wanting to put wire that they would poop on. Do you mean the bottom of the nest boxes? If so, I would recommend pine shavings or straw for the nest instead. Typically, they don't make much...
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the fun on a rainy, stormy afternoon! Maybe these will spark some ideas...

Hi Frodo and welcome!
You have a basic start there.
Hens will lay eggs in nearly anything (a milk crate, bucket turned on it's side, etc). This is referred to as a "nest box". They prefer to have it "dark", and a bit "private". For the nest boxes, typically between 2-4 hens will use the...
Thank you for posting this topic (and to those who have replied with great info). I also live in Michigan and want to raise rabbits for meat but this is fairly new to me. The Californian and New Zealand were my choices as well. Maybe I'll see you over at the other forum mentioned...good luck!
Thank you SO MUCH for this post! My sister has several aged hens that she wants to "replace" next spring and asked me to come and help her prepare them for the freezer but I can't remember much from when my ex-husband and I processed our own "meat" chickens years ago. All I remember is the...
Excellent! You're lucky to have a place where your flock can free-range and I hadn't thought about the floor becoming "slick" (have yet to build a larger coop) so thank you for that heads up! I live in southern Michigan so the winters here are "interesting" as well. That's great that you can...
Very nice! Is there a way to access the nest boxes from the exterior? I love the cedar and wished I could have used it on my little coop I built...maybe for the next one. I think I would also cover the floor with linoleum to help preserve the wood, keep moisture from soaking into it from the...
If you're experiencing shorter days and cooler temperatures, your chickens are probably molting (as all birds do) to replace old feathers. Birds also molt as they're growing and maturing. Typically, their egg production tapers off as well. If it is a molt, feathers will grow back sometime...
How awesome is this?! I hope I've done this right for a chance at the contest. Here is my Page, Coop Design: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/one-woman-one-saw-one-week
