Why are you making separate pens for chicks and duck? I raised mine together (as have many others on this site) and had no problems, in fact they were best buddies! I recently separated them because of mating season, but you would not have to get another duck if you did this. -

From what I've read, they go through stages before they finally sit on them, and since she is still laying an egg a day, she doesn't feel her nest is full yet, and she is sitting at night and covering them during the day.
