Comment by 'dirtyFlocker' in article 'Building a Coop with Recycled Materials: An Environmentally Friendly Approach to Poultry Keeping'

my coop is an old trailer base (8x4') with pallets on it and some plywood - I just insulated it this year- the roof is just a couple sheets corrugated plastic and the only fancy thing about it is the automatic door I added recently - they love that thing...

Comment by 'dirtyFlocker' in article 'To Insulate or Not to Insulate...'

I decided in my first winter this year to insulate my chicken trailer tractor - seemed like a smart move and just got it done in time- there's gaps around here and there, but we're not talking huge- maybe ½" on opposite corners. I only have 5 hens so I thought this was a good move- now it turns...

Comment by 'dirtyFlocker' in article 'Alternate method to prevent water freezing.'

good idea, but I have a better solution- I have a raised bucket on a small home made wooden stand - which then has a pipe to the drinking cups. I heat the bucket using a Plant Growing heat mat wrapped around the bucket and secured with a bit of rope. This is waterproof and safe- not hot, just at...

Review by 'dirtyFlocker' in article 'Cleaning and storing fresh eggs'

Great article! I don’t often see dirty eggs but I have a pencil so I can write the date I collected them on the blunt end, so I know how old each is. I only warm water wash and use a blue scrubber to remove dirt before use, as I keep all my eggs in the fridge for longevity- no cracked egg goes...

Using A Tarp To Lower Ground Temperature

I found a shade cloth with a water mister (online purchase for $20) dropped the temp by 40+ degrees too - and the chickens like the cool damp ground and the water too- like a chicken spa 😁

What's the temperature where you are???

Ok I know it’s not today’s temp (but not much different tbh!) however, when I got in my truck yesterday the dash said this: I’m in Raleigh, NC

    misting system

Yes I have this exact mister and I let it spray over my shade cloth which is 10’x12’ - I see my chickens under that shade all day long so it must be 15degrees cooler or more. The hose runs 100’ from my supply but even so it mists nice and cool. The only drawback is any small dirt or dust...

Review by 'dirtyFlocker' in article 'Keeping Chickens Without Free Ranging'

interesting ideas, love the swing! - could add that to my 'pallet palace'; let me explain!... I have a (free) 'pallet palace' in may fenced-in run, just three pallets leaning together and secured with extra strength zip ties... (I added additional zip ties made of stainless steel for safety/...

Good to know- appreciate you posting this info as finding it was impossible on the website! My neighbor down the street has a rooster but nobody has reported any problems so I think he’s ok…[for now!] I will let him know about the 0 rooster policy though.

    This chicken is not dead

We are also new custodians of a flock of 5 and see the dust bath need! We’re also going to create our bath(same ingredients minus the herbs) this weekend. I keep my coop and run mobile- so everything gets moved very quickly each night within just a few minutes after the chickens are roosting...

    Coop flooring and bedding material.

I think sand is great unless it gets wet, but it will freeze hard in sub zero temperatures so that’s regional dependent. I use aspen shavings and they work great- stink free. Nesting boxes have hemp Hurd which is pricey but very easy to clean- think cat litter scoop😉
