Thanks, I think this is the approach we'll take.

    Chicken walking upright

On inspection she has a swollen abdomen that feel squishy when gently pressed. She also doesn't move her wings and she doesn't talk like the other hen, not sure if relevant. My husband reckons it's ascites.

    Chicken walking upright

We have two old Isa brown hens which were given to us by an acquaintance. One of the hens is walking in an upright posture, sort of like a penguin. She was like that when we picked her up a couple of days ago, but no idea how long she's been that way. There was a third hen who died before we...

putting baby chick back with momma hen

Sorry to hear about that. I had a similar situation myself a while back but with only one survivor. It's not fun. Good luck with your little babies.

At the end of my rope -- abandoned chick problem

I thought I would come back and update this for anyone who had the same problem as we did. I tried mirrors and plush toys with no luck. Couldn't find a genuine feather duster but I doubt that would have worked either. In the end I bought a hamster cage and took her with me whenever I went out...

I have 2 roosters- by accident

True, but I recall the first time one of our hens went broody we knew it was a bad idea to let her sit on them (it was late autumn) but we couldn't bear to take her off. I just wanted to make sure that Hippychickadee was aware of the potential problems.

I have 2 roosters- by accident

Not really sure what exactly you're looking for advice on: is it the optimal ratio of roosters to hens, or is it on dealing with difficult neighbours? Or something else? Regarding hen to rooster numbers, it will probably differ depending on the temperament of the animals involved. Last year...

At the end of my rope -- abandoned chick problem

A week or two ago I posted about a situation. Long story short, one of our young hens was an appalling my mother: of five eggs, only two chicks hatched. Then she attacked both . We took the chicks into the house. The injured one didn't make it. Now we have a solitary three week old chick...

Egg with a crack in it, please help quickly!!!

Sounds like you've done the best you can do and now it's in the hands of fate. The only other thing I might suggest is to ensure that the hen isn't getting stressed or harassed in the nest so there is less likelihood of her damaging the egg further. But no doubt you already considered that.

Egg with a crack in it, please help quickly!!!

We had a couple of eggs which cracked, and we used wax to seal them again. We used ordinary white paraffin candles and dripped the wax only over the cracks, trying to make sure the wax wasn't too hot hitting the shell. Then we put the eggs in an incubator as we were worried that the hen would...

    Chicks

Could they just be having a dust bath? It looks quite alarming the first time you see it, but if they were fine afterwards it might be just dust bathing.

need immediate help with baby chick

In another thread I started, a fellow BYC suggested that I give my weak young chick some Nutri-drench as per this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/746509/how-to-deal-with-travel-stress-in-baby-chicks Apparently it gets absorbed directly before digestion and gives the chick strenth...

    Help please! Baby chicken pecked

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately she already died. I will print out the post you linked and keep it handy in case it happens again. I think I also need to put together a 'chicken first aid' kit for future use as I clearly need one. I don't want to be unprepared again. Now I have this...
