How to Break a Broody Hen

My hen is in day 3 of the 'Time Out Pen'. She has yet to lay an egg - I've read that is a sure fire way of knowing she's back to normal. Do others experience this to be true? (I haven't had time to read through all of the yet - so I don't know if thats been covered. Sorry if it has)

    Enlcosed Run/deep litter

I'm a big believer in DE. I use it in my potting soil mix - I've even used in my worm beds. I use it to kill ants in my garden, keep fungus gnats at bay for indoor pots, and helps keep mites off the chickens. I know it works for these things which to me outweighs the possibility that it...

    Enlcosed Run/deep litter

I also use the deep litter method in my run. However, don't do what I've done. I've used primarily wheat straw in addition to the food scraps and occasional dusting of DE. I don't have issues with smell nor is it muddy/mucky. My issue is the straw is compacting more than composting. Now...

    Chicken Laying on Side

    1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Americana 2) What is the behavior, exactly. Laying on her side in the run at night. When I picked her up felt like she wheezed. Very sluggish / No reactions. 3) How long has the bird been...

    2 Roosters - 1 has to go

Thanks all. I think I am gonna stick with the original plan and put the Orp roo into some chicken sausage recipe I've been wanting to try out.

    2 Roosters - 1 has to go

So I planned on having 1 Rooster - a Creme Crusted Legbar which I planned on selling some of the chicks from the hen I have to recoop some feed costs. But I ended up with a Buff Orpington rooster too. So now - should I stick with the plan knowing I probably will be stuck with Cream Crested...

    Egg Laying - Consistent

I thought about this. I have my coop positioned where they get sun all the way up to around 6pm. I'm going to put up a mesh tarp on the side to give them some more shade.

    Egg Laying - Consistent

I'm starting to get eggs - usually around 1 total a day from 8 hens all around the same age. I have 4 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Americana, and 1 Cream Crested Legbar. So far I have gotten maybe 10 eggs from these girls with 8 of them being brown and 2 being blue (from the legbar)...

    DntBrnDPig's coop build

Worked on the coop tonight. I had design paralysis for most of the day. Finally just got going. I think it's gonna work out fine.

    DntBrnDPig's coop build

Ha! yeah.. gonna have no problem killing these three. They are the dirtiest and eat the most food. Yeah the coop will be off the ground and the run is 4x10.

    DntBrnDPig's coop build

Did a little more tonight. Made the doorway and sured the structure up a little more. I plan on putting wheels on the door side so I'll install another 2x4 along the base. I'm also gonna do two horizontal braces on each side. Here are some pics of my birds. Two buff orps and a Cornish...
