Chicken Predator CSI - with crime scene PHOTOS.

I've come upon this a few times. Get a 'Live trap" soon, bait it with wet cat food, and you'll have the culprit. My experience is that they will be back. Take the 'culprit' for a 5 mile ride and let it go. I am very sorry for the loss. I will never get 'hardened' to the brutality of what I...

    Chicken Waterer

Folks, this is the culmination of using many different waterers for my chickens. I designed this for ease of use, and to have my chickens have clean water. I got tired of having to clean out the waterers every day. If you've had chickens you know what I mean. Each waterer is individually...

Mites and Lice Problem, Please Help

Yes, that is my experience. I always have play sand and DE for them to dust 'bathe' in. I have to add sand/DE as they throw it out of the tub, more DE than sand. If the lice have nothing to feed on they will die and you won't have any more around. Good luck to you.

some ways to protect your chickens from raccoons

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had that problem in the past. I use a live trap and after trapping him/her I take them for a 5 mile ride. Be sure to reset the trap as there may be more. I once caught 7 racoons in 8 days. The last one nearly tore my trap apart and my Ger...

Mites and Lice Problem, Please Help

Non-chemical/ natural> DE!! I use a mechanical duster, but you can use your hands to spread DE around your coop. Diatomatious Earth. I haven't had mite/worms for 7 years using food grade DE. Initially you may have to use Sevin, but most of the time DE work fine. I have a 10 gallon tub...

So many breeds.....which one is right for me?

If I was to start over with my chickens, even though I have none of these, I would have Buckeyes, Welsummers, or Speckled Sussex. I do have Barred Rock, Austrolorp. White Rock, Americauna, sex links, a few leghorns, and a few other, and I do have one gorgeous Sp. Sussex roo, but no girl for...

How many eggs can one hen handle

I put 9 eggs under all my surrogate standard size girls, and hope that at least 6 hatch, and 5 large eggs under my bantams. This is semi-controlled as I know where their nesting place is. I use surrogate moms whenever I find them. Sad, but I uaually throw their eggs away when I find their...

Possible Mycoplasma - but not MG or MS

I agree with the second post. I wanted to post 5 minutes after you posted but had to feed my animals. Sounds respiratory to me also. If they were mine I would add Tylan powder to their water. My sugestion may be 'off label' depending on the reference, but it worked for my chickens, turkeys...

How many days? - Treating for Worms (Wazine)

A good thread regarding this is: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/36477/wazine-17-how-many-days-should-the-eggs-not-be-eaten/10 I have used Wazine in the past, but no more. Not supposed to use/sell the eggs for 21 days or more because you're also supposed to 'retreat'.

    Beak Trimming?

Beak trimming is the 'act' of removing about 1/4 of the top 'beak' so hens are less apt to peck at each other or peck at eggs. I have never had the 'had to do it' moment to debeak a hen. I use concrete/fix-all filled eggs to stop the 'pecking of egg syndrome'. Basically speaking, they remove...

Is this dewormer safe to use?

I really try to stay natural, however, there are times that I use conventional meds. For chicken worms I us DE (diatomatious earth) and mix it with their food. I put a lot to where their food is almost white. I've found, that in three days or less their poop is back to normal. I have a bag...
