    Can anyone identify this baby?

2x on Delaware pullet, and she’s a beauty too! Congratulations, in my experience they’re super affectionate, curious and sassy.

That's It, We've Officially Lost Our Firsts.

Ugh, my condolences. What bum luck.

    Bunching at bedtime

We had this exact same behavior until 2 nights ago. All our 9 week olds would panic a little as the sun went down, crowd into a corner, and hunker down together. Then they’d quiet down and sleep. We started to gently guide them to the roosts a few evenings a week while it was still dusk and they...

Sudden power outage, baby chicks in the brooder. Ideas?

I didn’t even consider those crack heaters, what a good idea. We have those hot hands hand warmers that I bet I could insulate in a pinch. But some good news, in this hopefully very short lived thread - the generator is running, and the chicks are warm again. Thank you for your help.

Sudden power outage, baby chicks in the brooder. Ideas?

Hi all, posting from my phone since we’re experiencing a total power outage following some severe storms. I have 6 baby leghorns in the brooder, just got them yesterday, and now there’s no heat. We have an emergency generator that we’re going to have to pull out to get things going again, but...

What did you do with your flock today?

I've been told I'm ready for chicken trigonometry 😆 they're a lovely flock, I've been lucky so far! Guineas were the first ever fowl I came across after I left my job and home and started living on farms and ranches to prepare myself to be a homesteader. I couldn't believe they were real! The...

What did you do with your flock today?

Chicken math strikes again! I caved at TSC and picked up 4 Guinea keets. They're gorgeous little things, very prone to random backflips. This brings the count to 26. The rest of the girls and boys are outside - they still get a little nervous around dark. They do tend to settle once the sun is...

What did you do in the garden today?

Good looking out, thank you. I’ll do some looking into this. I’m a garden newbie, and we have the luxury of spare time and flexibility with the outcome.

DOG SHOW *PRIZES* Ends 5th April.

I can't believe I didn't see this thread sooner - I'm submitting our girl for consideration in the 11th hour. Name: Dutch - also known as Doopie, Boopie, Booper, Hoopie, and Hoops. We have no idea how we ended up calling her so many names that aren't her proper one. Age: 1 year, 3 months, 29...

What did you do in the garden today?

This update is cheating because I did it yesterday and forgot to add it to the thread - I transferred 8 lemon seedlings from our indoor grow light setup to pots outdoors. They seem quite happy! Today we were under severe thunderstorm warnings until about 2PM, but we didn't see the tiniest spit...

Is Princess Buttercup really the Dread Pirate Roberts?

I'm in total agreement with everyone else that you picked the best names. I also can't help with the gender, but I'm going to take a wild shot in the dark and say that you've got a Dread Pirate on your hands. Please keep us updated in the coming weeks!

What did you do with your flock today?

I'm pleased to report that our girls and boys have adjusted to their new living situation, and the panic from last night was short-lived. We had an eye injury - it looks like Lagan, one of the Delawares, got into a bit of a dust-up. Her eye looked a little recessed, and she had a droopy lower...

How did you feel when one of your chicks let you hold/pet it?

It's the greatest feeling and I'm glad you're experiencing it. I have 2 from my flock that hurry up to me every time I'm nearby. They love hopping up onto my hand together to hang out. When they were tiny, it was cute. Now that they're about 6 weeks old, it feels like we're really bonding...

What did you do with your flock today?

Another big day for us here on the Doomstead. The man of the house built poo boards and roosts in the barn, and the chicks played in the chicken tractor. We moved them into the coop at the end of the day. For about an hour all seemed normal. Now they seem agitated, trying to jump out, making a...
