We had two eggs Saturday morning. One seemed normal (brown with spots - hard) and the other was a "soft" egg - the shell is very soft (we've seen this with our chickens form time to time). One quail popped and landed on it - crushing it.
Ferret poop. I'm not joking.
When we had ferrets we had NO mice outside around the chickens - we even spread their poop around the coop. When the ferrets were gone and we stopped with the poop, the mice came back quickly.
I haven't tried peppermint yet but I want to - I want to grow tomatoes...
Our rough collie (classic collie) would try to baby them.
Our German shepherd (a real one, German working line, not the abomination that's bred here in the USA) would definately chase them and I think she would kill them.
One of our Belgian malinois would avoid them - maybe try to herd them...
Thank you all for the warm welcome!

Wow, Fort Lauderdale! I'm in Pompano Beach! and from S. Florida to another Floridian!!
You probably call my area "the ghetto" (North Lauderdale).

I totally agree with this, and those sticky fly strips. I really disagree with them because they are really quite cruel, in my opinion. But my dad was the one who got the sticky traps, and I got really mad at him and eventually he got rid of them. Luckily nothing got caught in them...
Very interesting thread to read. I hope to that Chickfilhay gets a ruling in their favor in court plus some non-civil charges against the dog owner in court.
This is not too uncommon here in south Florida. A few years ago our vet's livestock was attacked and killed (4 goats, 3 sheep were...
You wouldn't happen to have a link to game feed?
I'm assuming I should be able to get it at the feed store (where I get the chicken food, too)?
Edit: I just called the feed store. They have a blend and a maintenance - which one should I get (I'll assume maintenance since they're in a hutch?)
I figured I should post here. I found this forum this morning though Google (looking up how much I should feed my bantams).
We live in a rather urban area near Fort Lauderdale yet we have 1 bantam mix hen (our vet found so we took her in), 2 Dutch(?) bantam hens, and 4 quail. (If you think...
First - do they ever stop popping?
I've posted this over in the chickens area (along with several other questions) but I figured I might be able to get an answer here.
We got 4 quail in mid December - they were young then (I don't know how young they were when we got them - maybe a month...
I can't take out the scratch - it's all mixed together but next time I buy food I won't buy any scratch. Maybe I'll get an extra bag of layena and put that in a bim and do a 50/50 mix of the two when I make the bin I get thier daily food from (then it'll be 62.5% layena, 12.5% starter, 12.5%...
Thanx, I'll look into those. I really don't mind the mice around the chickens but they do eat my tomatoes when I grow them (hence why I don't grow them outside anymore). Maybe I'll try those two tricks and plant some more. Too bad I won't know about the mice coming around until AFTER I'm...
Thank you for the responses.
They're not free ranging (we're n a rather urban area) but in hutches.
So then the next time I buy food I should get maybe 1-2 bags of flock raiser (I think that's higher protein than starter and layena?) and 1 bag of scratch on the side? (I usually get 50 pound...
