New to Chickens - predator in Virginia that eats or bites neck and eats heads of chickens

Opossum. They for some reason only eat the heads dont know why. Use a live trap with tuna can . Poke a few holes in the can that way it doesn't make a mess. Cheap fix too.

    Livestock guardian dogs

I amazed that people have ever been able to keep there animals and not have them all slaughtered off by predators, must be every Tom dick and Harry that ever owned a few chickens had a true " livestock guardian" to keep the coyotes in check. People have used different dogs of all types mutts...

    Livestock guardian dogs

On large scale operations you do need proper LGD's, but on smaller homestead type farms with some chickens and a goat or pig there really isn't a need for those dogs IMO I live in new York and our coyotes are smaller then yours I would guess and not as plentiful. I have never seen a pack with...

    Livestock guardian dogs

My female caught a coyote at my dairy farm when she was around a year old, I thought I would be going to the vet. She bite on to his head and a little shake that was it. Crushed his melon. She will even move stuff like tires and pallets to get mice and rats. They were never bred to be prey...

    Livestock guardian dogs

Let me be clear I have no expertise in lgds. But for a 5 acre piece of land is it necessary to have such a large dog. I would think if your only really dealing with predators up to coyotes and stray dogs my vote goes with Doberman pinchers. I have 2 and 5 acres they can cross in about 25...

    Cornish meat birds housing

Ok then, I think I will do a more permanent style pen with a deep litter and just spread it once a year. Any substrates to avoid, I have multiple types I can use ie: hay, straw, sawdust both green and kiln dried, shredded paper, dry corn stalks, 2 types of sand a regular washed sand like on...

    Cornish meat birds housing

I have been reading and so far came up with a 5' x 12' tractor can hold 50, doesn't seem right to me with waterer feeders and such , so I am working on a 8'x12' for 50 but I plan on butchering some when they get to the "Cornish game hen" size so it will only have Maby 40 from 4 weeks on, roughly.

    Cornish meat birds housing

Ok so no panels under and wire around got it. Next question will they destroy my yard if I only move it 1 time a day? My yard is pretty nice and my wife is worried they will kill the grass. I work 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday thru Saturday and really would only be able to move it 1 time i always...

    Cornish meat birds housing

So I'm new to raising meat birds and have a few questions. First of which is the housing. I was thinking tractor style but I want to put some hog panel on the bottom so nothing can in theory dig in but I think it would be a pain to move because their little feet would go thru the holes. Has...

    Guard dogs ?

Depending on what types of predators you have would depend on the dog. Small breed dogs like boston terriers are great because they flip out to just about anything and are easier to care for and feed. If your dealing with large packs of coyotes or lots of stray dogs then the bigger shepards are...

Dog killed my chickens, I killed the dog

First off sorry for your chickens, I'm also sorry for the dog owners. I'm going to take slack for this but like others have stated dogs do get out and roam every now and then. Now I know you have every right to shoot the dog, but it seems to me there are better ways IMHO of dealing with dogs...

Chicken hurt by raccoon-safe to eat?

You exposed yourself to blood and fluids when you butcher the bird that can carry a disease. To each their own but I wouldn't chance it.

    Need serious predator help :(

I would think the cheapest way to go would be a small electric fencer $40 from tsc with wire spaced 4" apart that's how I plan on my chickens being protected. Then again I could be wrong, just my opinion.
