I got worms... From uncle Jims (http://unclejimswormfarm.com)
To find out how to raise them just google the species you are interested in.
I've never used the commercial beds or systems advertised, I am strictly for doing it on the cheap and low tech.
I have found that mealworms are the easiest...
Congratulations on the decision to keep chickens. It is a rewarding and educational experience.
Are you raising them for eggs? Meat? Pets?
They will eat just about anything including each other if neglected... I've always free ranged all of my birds. The will eat grass, bugs, gravel, and of...
I didn't use milk or even come close to finishing the birds in the traditional French way.
If I had a cheap source of dairy I would use it... I did give them a generous helping of home made Greek yogurt weekly.
The birds are definitely different.
OK, so I procrastinate... I ended up finishing the cockerels out for two weeks with scratch, corn, barley, wheat and a lot of meal worms. They remained free range until the end.
Processed as normal using cones to bleed them out, hot water to aid in defeathering, regular ice water bath in an ice...
Mine are finished - processing this weekend - not very meaty in my opinion... 75% free ranged - I'll post about the taste when we have an opinion.
Almost too pretty to eat.
I do still have some. I am finishing the cockerels next week to slaughter. Are you interested in pullets or cockerels?

You may also want to consider starting your own mealworm colony for winter (and year round) snacks. It's super easy just Google it.
I also do superworms but they require *70-*80 and grow slower. I use a home made worm incubator to keep them when the weather cools.
And the best way to sex...
While I was in the middle east we never refrigerated the eggs. The oldest one I ate sat on the kitchen counter and was nearly a month old ; it tasted fine... I made sure it was cooked well done though. We get so many eggs now that I usually scramble anything more than two weeks old and feed it...
Sorry to hear about your loss. My opinion is that it is too late to run out and get an incubator. You could try the light and paper towels but my feeling is that you will be wasting your time. Even if the chick survives it will be at a major disadvantage just from the temperature drop. Humidity...
I agree, no reason not to keep, ones own animals on their own property be them fowl or mammals. The chicken people on my street keep their birds in fenced areas or in a coop. I would not begrudge a neighbor that complained if there was an odor or my animals were causing them grief... on the other...

I recently moved and I have got way to many chickens running around in my backyard - I haven't had a chance to build a decent coop yet and the flock is running wild in my fenced backyard - obviously pooping on everything, sooo - time to downsize - I...
Very true -wet feed gets smelly very fast. I use it to grow out my BSF larvae - they love it but it smells horrible. I keep it downwind but now and then I see a flock of buzzards eyeballing the Soldier fly bins!
It will compost quickly - give the chickens access to the compost and they will turn...
Anyone selling Bresse locally? Are the cockerels priced higher? i only ask because I need to downsize for a move in the next two weeks and I can't manage the 45 I have plus my regular flock of layers. They are 5 weeks old and growing as fast as any red ranger I've had. I put an ad in Craigslist...
