So cute. You'll have to post a video. My Rouen hen makes those sort of chattery quacks, but my Welsh Harlequins never have. They are very spoiled and make loudmouth quacks when they want something. Sounds more like a honk than a quack to me. We joke that they're looking for Hank. Sometimes...
Other than laying a fairy egg a few days ago, she seems to be doing fine. She just hatched last August (on my birthday :D), so it's her first year laying. Maybe her hormones are still a bit whacky. Hopefully it was just a one time thing. Just seemed weird for a duck to be constipated, but she...
Anyone ever had a constipated duck? The other day, my hubby noticed one of our ducks was acting sluggish, and her belly was hanging lower to the ground than normal. She didn't lay an egg that morning, so we thought maybe she was egg bound. Brought her inside for a warm bath in the tub, and...
This also happens to my ducks when they've been eating slugs, especially this time of year when it's wet, and the slugs are out like crazy. The mucus from the slugs is so thick that they clean their beaks but it takes a while for them to get it all off.
Along the same lines, if anyone in the Central Maine area has a Welsh Harlequin drake they need to rehome, let me know. I lost my beloved drake, Edgar, last July and think I'm finally ready to get another one. I've thought about getting more ducklings, but I am pretty happy with the four...
That is interesting! I have a Rouen that I'm pretty sure is laying a blue-green egg. I have all Welsh Harlequins and just the one Rouen, and I've been getting one blue-green egg everyday. The WH eggs have always been cream/white colored. This is the first year that the Rouen started laying...
Did you have any issues with the Cayuga drake mating with the Welsh Harlequins? My flock is all WH (plus one Rouen), but I have the opportunity to adopt three Cayuga (two females and a male). Just wondering about size difference. I currently have all females, so the Cayuga would be the only...
So sorry for your loss. 💜 Most of the time when my ducks have tried to mate, it's in the water, so I would think you would be ok. But you could always separate him during mating season if you see it becoming an issue.
Last summer in a fit of grief after losing my beloved drake, I took all...
That happened to me too. The weather got really cold, and I was concerned about them not eating enough, so I gave in and let them eat their old food. But now that it's warm, I'm going to give them mainly the Mazuri with a lot less of the other stuff.
I 100% agree! A healthy, thriving flock is my goal, eggs are just an added benefit to having ducks! The food I was giving them was a straight pellet. I had read about birds eating scratch & peck blends and picking out their favorites, thus not getting the right nutrients, so I did not want...
That is weird! Did you give them a different treat lately that they might be begging for? Mine sit outside of our front door all the time, but it's usually because they want something, the wind is really bad, or they want attention. Some days we have to put a bunch of things in front of the...
Awesome! I am hopeful they will love it soon. They ate a bit more this morning than they had been, so I lowered the amount of the old food. Guess I'm just inpatient because my other animals have never had a problem switching food. I actually have to switch up my cat food periodically because...
I thought it was weird too! He said he didn't think it was because the feed was organic specifically, but that the organic feed companies were smaller and were striving to meet the organic certification but not as experienced in the nutritional needs of birds (not just ducks). Which I thought...
I just had to take a duck to the vet, and the x-ray itself was only $30 and was of her entire body since ducks are so small. I agree the treatment will probably be the pricey part. In my case, she had an enlarged heart, so there wasn't anything we could do. But it did give me peace of mind...
