Hello chicken friends! I'm restarting my flock after total predator loss. I've moved through hard sad feelings and onto reclaiming the coop as my place of happiness.
I have done so much work making it better out there:
1. Installed a Pullet Shut auto door, with solar power and so far it is...
Update: I installed the auto door- really proud of myself. Also hung netting over the run for hawks and have been plugging up some tiny gaps where a rat had been getting in.
Put together the start of a small bantam flock and they are settling in. My new rooster is really fun. Ordered some...
Came home early last night to secure my remaining 5 chickens. Discovered this morning I failed to close and lock. Probably raccoons, woke up to those heartbreaking piles of just feathers.
Totally my fault. I did this last month, and have a solar automatic door kit to install this coming...
She's a little better this morning. Openned her eyes a little bit, one more than the other, Took a wee bit of sugar water when I dipped her beak. Did the drinking beak movement after a dip then seemed to fall back asleep. Did not want any scrambled egg. Gave Nutridrench.
No cuts or anything but...
Typing this with my new showgirl in my lap. She's five-ish months old I think. I've been trying to add her to my small flock for a few days but the hens were not being very nice to her so I've been mostly doing the look can't touch thing with her in a small coop in the run. This morning I...
It took mine a few days to get used to them- usually one of them figures it out and steps in. Treats could be smart! They are very shallow, just enough to cool their feet. It’s very easy to set up and reset for me. Running a mister resulted in too many flies over here but this has been easy!
I’m in Texas too. When it’s triple digits or close to it- I add water they can stand in- a couple of baking trays in deep shade are easy and helpful. I haven’t lost chickens to heat. A raccoon, yes.
“There's also something so lovely and satisfying about watching something grow—especially at the pace of chicken raising.”
I love how you said this. Yes!
…this is the question I was asking myself driving out last night to obtain two Showgirls I was sooooo excited to pick up. Grabbing cash from the ATM. Told spouse I had an “errand”. Put the new girls in my coop under cover of darkness so the flock & my husband would just wake up together no big...
I brought three beautiful 8 week old Seramas today and then noticed their toes were caked with I assume dried poop? I had to soak each chick in warm water and work pretty hard to remove. Their nails weren’t visible at all.
So bummed, I like this breeder but that has to mean pretty dirty living...
