Beginning an "Unexpected" Backyard Flock of Rouen Ducks

...and I should probably mention that they were fine for about a year before our girl was killed...

Beginning an "Unexpected" Backyard Flock of Rouen Ducks

Something I wish I would have been told about as a new duck owner... beware of your male/female ratio - if you bought four and three end up male, your female could be killed by the males "overbreeding" her, to put it nicely, and speaking from personal experience. From what I've read there should...

    Astro turf?

This is the river sand I was talking about. Just got more for my boy's coop! ;-)

Ended up with 3 males and 2 females.

Almost finished with the new addition! I've already painted the new stuff and we moved the new roost from the front left of the old coop to on the porch behind the pond on the back right, then cut out the wire mesh so they can come and go into their roost from their new area. I'll get more pics...

    Astro turf?

Thank you! I got side-tracked and forgot to take a pic of the sand in my hand... I will try to remember to do it tomorrow!

    Astro turf?

I am no expert, but I would not risk it! I got coarser sand called river sand here - it is a natural sand they get from riverbeds is what I was told. I will take a pic of some in my hand so you can see here in a little bit!

    Astro turf?

One more thing... we have added on to the enclosure above in order to separate the males and females, I will post pics when we're done!

    Astro turf?

Btw, I also use pine shavings inside their roost/coop where they sleep. The pond is set in the deck so we could run a 4" pipe underneath for drainage... just pull the plug and viola!

    Astro turf?

I put the river rock down thinking it would help reduce the transfer of sand into their pond and coop, but I didn't want to put it all over because I had read about rocks causing bumblefoot. I thought it looked nice and gave them the choice of a variety of surfaces to walk on. Paid a lot of...

    Astro turf?

I would not use ANY rocks! Most of our ducks steered clear, but we lost one because she ate so many rocks she stopped eating and couldn't pass them. There's not much on the internet regarding the subject, but I am telling you from personal experience to save you from the heartache we have gone...

    Astro turf?

P.s. Just wanted to add that I am NOT talking about river rocks - those are a no-no! I mean river sand, it is a natural, coarse sand as opposed to the fine synthetic type...

    Astro turf?

There are so many different kinds of sand... we found "river sand" at our local rock yard... what kind do you use?
