Quail Chick Curled Feet, Please Help :(

Even if you have to cull, do you need to be so cruel about it? I had one chick with curled toes. Used masking tape (next time I'm trying a bandaid) for a couple days and now it's fine. No suffering. You don't think "pulling the head off" causes pain?? Try it on yourself sometime. You'll see.

Need Some Help With Fermented Feed Issues

I read somewhere that moving the feeders around can prevent the bullies from being overly territorial. I hope that works anyway. When I throw them scratch or other treats, I spread it around to several feeding spots. I do notice, there are some bullies. Little stinkers.

crushed(power) wood pellet better than non crushed for button quail?

Now I'm wondering....how would those pellets work in a compost toilet situation?? One compost toilet is for #1, the other for #2. I'm thinking it might reduce the smell. BUT...does it break down when put into a compost pile?? Would it turn into a huge, thick mess that would be difficult or...

crushed(power) wood pellet better than non crushed for button quail?

My aviary sits on the stone tiles (kind of like terrazzo) of our large balcony. I just read another thread where they cautioned against putting them on smooth floors. It's like walking on marbles. So, now I'm returning one bag. I'll mix a few under their waterers. I'm wanting to reduce the...

    Horse Stall Pellets

Ah. THANK you so much for this bit of advice. My aviary is on a tile floor (our very large balcony.) I guess I'm going to return on of the two bags I bought yesterday. I'll put some under their waterers.

crushed(power) wood pellet better than non crushed for button quail?

Are wood pellets the same as horse pellets? If the pellets powder down so quickly, how are they a low dust option??

    Bedding Experiment Results

I've been using wood shavings in my aviary. I live in a region with long, dry, summers with periodic heat waves; upper 90's or lower 100's. Sometimes they last a few weeks. My aviary is shaded by a northern and western wall and has a shade cloth on it, 50% UV reduction. As I was sleeping, my...

My Jumbo quail roo is injured on his backside, kind of to his left.

Antibiotics in many of their feeds as far as I can read in the analyses. This tells me their overall outlook, which is not organic. I could call them, but they probably deal only with large operations, not backyard flocks. I'm looking for organic, otherwise, for me, there is no point. I'm...

https://en.ardapcare.com/products/quiko-bob-wachtelfutter-fasanfutter Video for preparing Quicko "rusk." The video instructions are for a different mix, but my mix has rusk in it as one ingredient. They say never to serve rusk dry, so it makes me wonder if I should moisten the mix before...

    Fermenting Quail Feed

The other thing I forgot to point out in my "most successful" paragraph after my enumerated list: They adore fodder (microgreens.) It seems especially flax greens, but they also loved the rye grass, and of course, always French Sorrel, even if the leaves are very large. I tie up 4-6 bunches and...

    Fermenting Quail Feed

I hope you don't mind the long post. I am fermenting my grains and seeds, and am committed to it, as I well understand the risks phytic acids and other anti-nutrients in seeds and grains. We generally try to ferment the grains, seeds, and nuts that we eat ourselves as well. Not doing so can...

My Jumbo quail roo is injured on his backside, kind of to his left.

Update: My roo is healed up. 5 days in a separate cage, then reintroduced him to the covey by moving everyone out to a separate, temporary enclosure for a day, and putting the roo in the main aviary, along with one stubborn hen who refused to be lured into the temporary enclosure. She seems to...
