I think my newly minted hen (1 yr today) is broody…?

My girls from Last year hit 1 today. And the past couple days I noticed one of my buff orpingtons started puffing up (as in raising hackles when others or I approach her )and going”rRrrrrrrrr”, like she’s pissed. She’s super vocal all of a sudden and makes this sound when I’m handing out...

Bird flu anxiety as snow melts

Thanks for the suggestion, haha. I’ve been trying to get into therapy for all this for ages, but the wait is months long, then inevitably it gets cancelled and scheduled out more months. Nothing ever happens. I used to take medication before my daughter but after it only Exacerbates my anxiety...

Bird flu anxiety as snow melts

I’m in upstate NY … and we have had SO much snow. Welll, it’s going to finally get above freezing which means snow melt. My birds have been safely buttoned up all winter … but once all this damn snow starts melting I’m pretty sure the completely Covered run they’re in (not allowed to free...

Sweet lord it never ends. Bumblefoot?

Oh this girl was going ham on the straw… I have a thread on it here haha https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/what-would-cause-a-33-week-old-pullet-to-eat-straw-and-not-crumbles.1649358/ Forgoing food to slurp it up like spaghetti. I’m trying pine flake as it’s what I have for the coop. I...

Sweet lord it never ends. Bumblefoot?

I see in the wrapping one they have let their hen back out with the others. Is that standard?

Sweet lord it never ends. Bumblefoot?

One of my girls started eating the straw in my run almost explicitly, so I was advised to remove it. Now there’s hard packed earth. ANOTHER one of my girls just appears to have developed bumblefoot? (Picture included). She’s then Wyandotte and the heaviest .. I can only imagine it’s related...

How to tell is it’s molting or something else?

Do combs get floppy during molt? I’m looking through old photos and she’s definitely floppier than she was in the summer…

What would cause a 33 week old pullet to eat straw and not crumbles?

Interesting. That’s possible given the ratios in the food. Thanks for the thought - what do you recommend?

What kind of wound is this?

    How’s this looking to you?

What would cause a 33 week old pullet to eat straw and not crumbles?

Also. I’ve been checking her crop in the morning and it appears to be completely flat… so I don’t think there’s an impaction thus far? I’m just not sure what to do. I’d take out all the straw but the ground seems like it needs something covering it and my options are very limited in the winter...

What would cause a 33 week old pullet to eat straw and not crumbles?

It’s not! That’s what’s weird! They’ve had it for months. I guess it could be the treats. I would like to use something other than straw for the litter in the run but I have no room for a chip dump and it’s so wet between snow melting, rain, ice and a saturated water table I need something...

What would cause a 33 week old pullet to eat straw and not crumbles?

This is a new issue that’s cropped up. This girl is usually a little pig but lately she’s been turning her nose up at the chicken feed (nutrena layer and kalmbach all flock) even when wet. I know it’s cold and maybe they don’t appreciate the cold food but even dry she’s primarily eating the...

    Finding straw in poop

My main concern is that she’s still getting the nutrition she needs. Since i feed commercial (nutrena / kalmbach) I’m assuming her needs would be met and we wouldn’t have a vitamin deficiency unless she’s suddenly not absorbing something … but I would like to see her eating less straw. Mine is...
