    Getting more ducks

Thanks very much. We are going to get materials to build a run today. Once we know it's safe we will get her some friends. :)

    Getting more ducks

Thank you for your helpful reply! We will introduce them gradually when we get new ones. For now our priority will be building a safe run though, before bringing any more home. :)

    Getting more ducks

Hi all, Some of you might have ready my last post - I had two ducks (sisters) whom I got from a home with a lot of other ducks who would not let either of them get any food. Yesterday, I sadly lost one of my ducks to a predator and I feel so terrible for the one that is left. After receiving...

    Run for ducks

So after very sadly losing one of my two free-roaming ducks today to a predator, i'm now looking at building a run to keep the remaining duck safer. Although they were free roaming they had a duck house and were put in at night. So I'm just looking for advice on the run - mainly size. I don't...

Yes it is like a ferret.. They're pretty notorious and killed a lot of the chickens we had when I was growing up.

Thank you for your advice :) Can I ask the reason why it should be made of hardware cloth, out of interest?

Definitely not Racoons as we live in the Shetland Islands (Scotland) so get nothing like that here. We don't get minks either but get polecats which are similar. and well known for killing domestic ducks and chickens.. But I am just convinced it's an otter on this occasion as we see them here...

Thank you for the advice. We are definitely considering a run for her now and would consider more ducks if she'd be happy. :)

Thank you. As far as I can think of there are only otters and polecats here which would go for ducks or chickens.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Confinement is still an option, but just looking for advice. How much outside space is needed for each duck? Also is it better to get more ducks for company for her or just keep her by herself? We got her from a home where her and her sister seemed to be picked on by...

    Feeling sad :(

Thank you. :hugs I am fairly certain it must have been an otter. Before getting our ducks we were questioning whether otters would be a danger to them or not. My partners mum later told us that in her experience otters do go for them and that when they do they don't leave much, which would seem...

    Feeling sad :(

We got our two new ducks who were sisters only a few weeks ago and named them Rhonda and Frida. We returned home today to find one of them had been killed by what we are assuming was an otter, and nothing left of her but her beak. It's horrible! I am now feeling terribly guilty that we didn't...

Taming my new ducks and building them a lovely new home

Thanks :) The ducks will be locked in their house at night but roam in the garden through the day.. I am still considering a run anyway though so that when we are out they can still be outside and be safe. We live right by the sea and get a lot of otters around here - does anyone know if otters...

Taming my new ducks and building them a lovely new home

Thank you! We've had this since last night and they freaked out every time they seen us. I've been in to them a few times today and sat with them, they have eaten some pellets and the last time I was in they just stayed huddled together and didn't move or make a sound when I was in. So I think...

Taming my new ducks and building them a lovely new home

Hello everyone! I'm a first time duck mama, I just took home my two Shetland Duck girls. The guy I got them from was re homing them as they didn't get on with the rest of his ducks and they would not let them get any food. They are not in the best condition and one of them is particularly...
