Ours while we were building the run! Modified the design from the blueprints—both sides fully drop down and there are 2 windows with hardware cloth screens on each side for lots of ventilation. It is far from perfect but I don’t think the chickens care much :D
I wouldn't stress too much about chicken-safe things, they will avoid most (if not all) poisonous plants unless they are starving or extremely bored. They might just take a couple test nibbles before moving on to tastier things (lol)
Their barring gives them away—the males will look more white than black, and the females will look more black than white. Someone else will be able to explain it better (barring genetics), but that’s a basic description!
You could definitely be right, that ones showing a lot less comb and wattles!
This isn’t the best quality pic but just for comparison this is my Orpington (gray, in the back) at 9 weeks
I have an almost 10-week-old Splash Orpington pullet who still has a completely yellow (and tiny) comb. I can’t see #5, but they are all looking like cockerels to me. Hopefully some experts can chime in on here. :(
I’m thinking I may need to order more Green Queens next time I get chicks. Mine is now 8 weeks old and starting to look pretty similar to a Black Faverolles—I’d really love to know what the parents are!
These beds would be outside the run, and ours don’t (can’t) free range in our yard....at least not yet! I was thinking of planting some pumpkins etc (annuals) and letting them pick around in the early spring, fall, and winter when nothing is growing. :thumbsup
Like the title says, we are going to install garden beds around our run soon-ish and are looking for some photos to guide us! Post pics and feel free to give some advice and what you like or don’t like about your set up :)
The run is fully enclosed with 1/2 inch welded wire (including the roof) and we have now tacked down and secured the 3-4 foot apron—the rat couldn’t get in last night or the night before but I’ve seen the dig marks at the edge of the run where the dirt is covering the apron. We also bring their...
Mine is 6 weeks old, very pretty so far! Has a green sheen on feathers. Kind of in the middle, personality-wise—could take or leave any human attention and is pretty independent in the flock.
