Volts are not dangerous. Friends, please note that it's important to recognize how many of us are inclined to be afraid of electricity, and how an even greater majority do not understand how it works, its calculation, and the application of what those numbers mean. HERE IS THE SCIENCE LESSON...

WeldedWire - Know this, it's important!

Electroplated certainly will still do the trick - it's just not as good as hot dip. Just like blowing your nose with a piece of copy paper will still do the trick... But a Kleenex is better! Long term - the wire & welds will be better protected if they are hot dipped - GAW (Galvanized After...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

A tip for inside: Build multiple levels to maximize square footage! My fully enclosed raised stage provides over 100 extra square feet! I also use it to brood my chicks alongside the hens each spring. It has its own private door to a 100% enclosed run, safe for small Pullets just learning...

WeldedWire - Know this, it's important!

I did this too, my problem was the lack of predator protection (which you already addressed) - and that Hawks and sparrows would "bounce" off it and get stuck in ge 1" mesh holes. I had to tug a sparrow out of the nettng once- but gey usually find their way out. Also - when disposing of...

:) *********** BEST ANSWER ************ :) I have all kinds of chickens. Heavy orpingtons, light leghorns, flighty americauna, fancy red-laced-blue wyandottes, and even mini serama - and everything in between! I love having variety. I know for certain every single on of my birds can fly to...

    Letting chickens forage ONLY?

ANSWERS HEREThe facts are IN ! I have spoke with my grandparents, my great uncle, and some older people who raised chickens waaaaayyyy back. (Think 1940s etc.) They had 10 acres, 7 tilled with corn & soybeans. The lawn was an acre (not magnificently mowed as 21st century lawns) and the other 2...

If you could add two chickens to your backyard flock what would they be?

Blue Laced Red Wyandotte & Sebright I just ordered them, plus 6 other varieties to compliment my heritage breed flock. Now I'm going to have: Serama, Buff Orpington, RhodeIslandRed, Black Sex-linked, Anconda, Americauna, Easter Eggers, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Leghorn, Black Australorp, Red...

     Free Range ONLY, no feed???

Great advice. I hadn't considered the camouflage aspect. I'm sure a hawk that sees a mouse at 100yds would be able to see a chicken at any reasonable distance- BUT I'm still considering it to be a good idea. I agree, any meat birds bred for fast growth would probably starve or just entirely...
