    You've gotten some good advice here, OP. I agree with waiting until your girls are older, and with looking for an older rooster, if you want to minimize risk.     I keep a dish of whole peanuts in my yard and now the crows yell at me when I don't fill it quickly enough in the mornings 😂 But they are great for alerting to predators, and occasionally even chasing them away.

    Wow, and here I am complaining about the gophers on our 2 acres… sounds like we need to get with the program 😅 Thankfully we haven’t had any major injuries yet, but we do pasture sheep where the gophers are constantly digging giant holes and *I* roll my ankle in them constantly.
