    New Hen Old Hen mixer...

When can you mix old and new chickens? I have 3 two year old barred rocks and seven 11 week old hens (two roos). I have the 3 old hens in a separate "temporary" coop but want to put them all in the big coop.

Roos mixed in with hens.....when can I eat them?

For the second time in two years some of the "hens" I got turned out to be roosters. Out of 7 I have 5 hens. I do NOT want to keep a rooster again so I was planning on "repurposing" them but wanted to wait until they were mostly full grown. They are Australorps and are already 11 weeks old. The...

    Pasty butt....

Had the same issue and kept seeing people post about adding sand as grit for chicks. I also noticed that chick starter food is really hard! I blended their food into almost a powder and no more pasty butt! They seem to eat a lot more...of course I did add a tsp of ACV to their water but the...

    Dead Hen...WHY?!?!?!???

I had a just-turned 2 year-old Buff Orpington die on me during the night. No signs of stress, she put her self to bed last night just fine. When I went to open the pull door she was laying on the bottom stone cold dead! There were no signs of entry, the other 3 chickens emerged just fine. Looked...

    Chicken Saddle Issues

Can you post some pictures of the saddles you use? I will post some as well here in a bit.

    Chicken Saddle Issues

I have 6 hens that all have bare spots at the base of their tails (Our rooster has been a bit to "randy" lately ). I bought some chicken saddles for them (appropriate sizes at that) and they don't care for them at the moment. I'm curious to see if anyone else has used chicken saddles and has...

    Bare spots and cold temps

My chickens have feathers missing at the base of the tail for our overly friendly rooster. Do I need to cover them up with a chicken saddle to protect them from cold temperatures? And to protect them from the roo?

Please tell me this is some sort of molting.....

Will the feathers grow back before the next molt? If I don't use a saddle what will happen? I mean what do people do if they have this issue and have 60 chickens?

The feathers in that area seemed more ruffled everytime he mounts them. His balance sucks so he rocks back and forth on their back until he gets where he wants to be....even the smallest bird is starting to show some ruffled feathers in that area

Please tell me this is some sort of molting.....

Its only at the back near the tail feathers as shown in the previous pics. The spots seemed to be closing up and I didn't notice anything else, I wondered if they were stressed (food got a bit low and had low water levels one or two days). BUT, we recently got back from vacation and I noticed...

Please tell me this is some sort of molting.....

I saw the rooster mate one of the BO's today and noticed that when he was done her feathers were well ruffled in that exact spot. All my BR's have the spots and the EE but my two BO hens do not. One is the smallest hen by far, the other is a bit larger but I have never seen her be the least bit...

Please tell me this is some sort of molting.....

First:I have 6 hens and one Rooster in a fenced run/coop. They are all at least 26 weeks old. My father-in-law said he noticed some of the birds pecking and eating some feathers off each other. I have yet to see this myself but several of my hens have bare spots on them, all of them where the...

    Frostbite? But how.....?

So if I were to poke some holes in the foamboard that would be enough? If I remove them completely, won't wind become a factor?

    Frostbite? But how.....?

I have one rooster who is 20+ weeks old. His comb and a couple of the BRs were black at the tips.......

    Frostbite? But how.....?

The coop I have has a run area and a sheltered indoor area as shown below You can see some open areas in the top (just under the roof) but I have sealed them off with sheetrock foam. We have had nights go down to 27 or so and I haven't noticed any frostbite. But when I got home from work...
