    Rooster Dilemma

Thank you for your advice. Like you said, I don't need a rooster but I want one; to me they are a part of having chickens. I do miss my rooster terribly. I am not that experienced yet so I acted in the best interest of my flock, so I thought. I guess, I have to live with that. I like your second...

    Rooster Dilemma

I thought about a separation but they do get a bit crazy when they can't protect their hens. I thought that was cruel if I do that. All my options weren't optimal. I do miss him very much, though. Perhaps raising one, like a Buff Orpington, with my current flock, would make a difference and take...

    Rooster Dilemma

That is a great option to consider. It was becoming extremely stressful especially in the late afternoon.

    Rooster Dilemma

I have 7x one year old hens and 6x six months old pullets. The rooster was about 7 months old give or take. Perhaps the problem is that the roosters are too young and just go crazy plus his huge size didn't help either.

    Rooster Dilemma

Thank you for your helpful input. Perhaps, I need to reevaluate my flock dynamics and what would work best for all.

    Rooster Dilemma

Yesterday was the saddest day since my chicken journey began about a year ago. My first adopted rooster was brutally terrorizing my hens so he had to go. Shortly after that, my neighbor had a young beautiful Brahma rooster so I took him in to my flock of 16 hens. He was the sweetest boy ever, we...

    Hens have bare backs

Both animals have a quick that you can see in light nails very well so if you cut into that the nail will bleed. My trimmer is a grinder rather a cutter so it is much safer. They nails work the same on chickens and dogs. I appreciate your concern very much, though. We all want the best for our...

    Hens have bare backs

I attached some pictures, Trudy's is pretty bad. Happy and Lucy are not as bad but also a concern. I couldn't take a pic of my Orpington she just looks like Trudy though. The rest seems to be fine.

    Hens have bare backs

I will, I have a special trimmer/grinder for my dogs. I had over 16 dogs in my lifetime and I trimmed all of their nails.

    Hens have bare backs

I have different ages the oldest batch are 11 months old. Then I have two 7 months old and the rest are 5 months old. The four he likes are 3-11 months old and one 7 months old. He is a bit clumsy so a most of my hens are getting away from him. He is very sweet roo, though. Absolutely no...

    Hens have bare backs

I will trim his nails. I only thought about his spurs that are still very short but not the nails. I have a dog nail trimmer that I will use. Thanks.

    Hens have bare backs

I have 16 hens all together but it seems he refers these four. The others are fast and get away from him. His spurs are not growing yet but I can file his nails with the dog trimmer. I did order saddles but I don't think it is a long term solution. My question is will he ever change as he...

    Hens have bare backs

I recently added a six months old dark Brahma rooster to my flock of 16 (six are still young pullets). I just noticed that four of my hens have bare backs, broken feathers but no scratches or bleeding. I can't find any mites or lice, I don't think they are molting since one of them is only seven...
