I realize artificial light this time of year is not really that important. My intentions are to keep the light and consequently the egg production at optimum, and since I only use a 13 watt fluorescent light bulb, the electric bill is really negligible.
Currently my timer turns the light on in the coop at 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm. This gives them about 14-15 hours of daylight.
I did some research and found that they need the same 14 hours of light, but it's best to have it from about 4:00 am till about 8:00 pm. This timeframe is supposedly best...
chikadee2, my experiences and outcomes have been exactly as yours? Tried blocking the boxes and they would sleep on the roosts. As soon as I stopped, they would go back to the boxes. I know which one is the instigator (the RIR) and they rest of them all follow her example. They know how to...
I know there are threads in this list with pics on how to hold the chicken, hold the mount open and feed the liquid wromer thru a syringe. I saw one yesterday but did not bookmark it. Can you help? I need to administer wormer to my chickens this weekend and not looking forward to catching and...
It's good to know i can use either brand. I think I'll try the Big V Feed layer ration, only because the pellets are more uniform in size and a little smaller.
One more question please....
You mentioned to toss the eggs in garbage 14 days after last dosing. Since they have not started laying yest, I assume it'll be OK to eat them if the start laying after 14 days past last dose, or should the first batch be thrown out anyway?
Thanks for the info and course of treatment. It's a relief that the round worm does not effect my dogs who occasionally eat the chicken poops, yak!
By the way the worm is definitely round. From little research I've done on this forum I suspected it was round worm but needed to post pictures...
Hello everyone. I'm in a bit of panic and dismay! I went to clean up the coop this morning and found what looks like a worm in one of the poops (see pics below). This is the first time I've noticed it so, hopefully I caught it early. I have four chickens from 17 to 19 weeks old that we've...
If I may get back to the initial reason I started this thread..... Does everyone agree that the main list of ingredients I posted in my first post for the Nutrena and Big V Feeds are essentially the same? Another words, their terminology in describing the ingredients is essentially their own...
I've been blocking the nest boxes for the past three nights and they spent the entire nights on the roosts. I'm going to do it for a few more days and see if they'll learn and go back to their old ways!
My Fat Annie is a Buff Orpington. Sweetest girl. will be laying any day now. The RIR is Daisy. She is kind of shy and nervous, But often when I'm sitting in the yard she jumps up on the bench next to me. As long as I don't make any sudden moves she sits there looking at me!
I kind of thought both products had similar ingredients regardless of what they call it. The one think I liked about the Big V Feed products is that their layer pellets are smaller and more uniform in size, I Nutrena layer had some larger pieces close to 1/2" in size. didn't realize mad cow...
Hi Folks. I would like to get your opinions on the pros and cons of the stuff in my chicken feed.
I'm trying to compare the ingredients of two different feeds. Both are starter/grower type feeds. One made by Nutrena and the other by a mill out of Oklahoma called Big V Feeds. I know the...
Well, since they slept in the nest boxes again last night I decided to try putting a board in front of the boxes today. So, tonight they're going to have a bit of surprise when they go into the coop and try to jump in! I'm also planning to check on them at 9:00 tonight when my timer light...
Well, coming from a home with no roosts and sleeping in the nest boxes probably had a lot to do with it. Sounds like you didn't have too much trouble breaking them of the habit. I'm about to go out to check and see if they slept in the boxes last night.
