    My Leghorn slowed to about one egg a week last winter & she has slowed down already . I live in Colorado & it is still in 50ies during the day. I won't get another.

    How many hens do you have? In my town we can only have 6 hens. I can provide for the family & sell 2 or 3 dozen a week depending on the time of year.

    I have always thought that the eggs need to be checked at the VERY minimum once a day. I think the longer you leave them in there the more tempted they will be to go back to old habits of eating them.

    I have one that is just 18 wks & laid her first egg this morning. Small egg very thin shelled. I thought it took them awhile to mature so this surprised me.

    Thanks for the info! I have been using straw for our coop for about a year. Living in Colorado I had mold issues this spring & was thinking of using something else. Can you wash the sand & reuse in in the coop once it has dried out?

    Feeding egg shells

    All I do is just rinse my shells off & set them in the window to dry. I break them up & feed them to my hens a couple times a week. Have never had any sick chickens & NO egg pecking.
