This is the 2nd hen in a month, no signs of entry under the fence and the carcass was ripped open and eaten in place, not dragged away which I would think a fox or coyote would do? Here's a photo of the aftermath, what do you think? We're in rural Central PA so we do have hawks and occasionally...
Thanks Mrs. K, I just feel bad for her because she's been through so much already and now her flock is rejecting her, poor thing. They don't seem to be attacking her or picking at her (at least no blood yet) so I'm hoping it will be ok but the issue is that the coop has an auto-door that opens...
I had a hen that got mauled by a predator and barely made it. I had her isolated from the main flock for 6 weeks while she mended. This week she hopped out of her pen and was over near the divider to the main coop so I figured she was ready to return (probably lonely all alone). But I get the...
One of my little easter eggers got mauled by something (dog, fox probably) and had a huge gash torn in her back and her leg injured (not sure if it was broken or not but she had a bad limp). I seriously contemplated putting her down because of it, I didn't want her to suffer. But others had...
Wanted to follow up on this for others who might find this thread with a similar problem. In my case, they didn't have a roost initially so understandably they used the nesting box bars since they like to be off the ground. Initially they were suspicious of their new roost when I added it, but I...
yeah they can all fit on the highest perch easily, even the middle level one is comparable to the nesting box bar. This nesting box does indeed have the fold up bars, I can try that first and see if it dissuades them
OK took your advice and built a nice roost with 3 'steps' at different levels between about 14 inches and 42 inches. They checked it out and climbed on it but like iml8agn said they still sleep in the boxes when it comes time for sleep -lol
I've got some netting I'm going to cover them up like...
OK gotcha, I assumed the front parts WERE the roosts but that actually makes more sense, I'll rig up a 2x4 higher then. Do they have any problem if it's located by a window do you think?
Can you not see them in the photo? There are two wooden bars, one for the top row, one for the bottom row. See the big yellow hen on the left? She's on the top bar in the photo. They also have a tree branch I ran along one wall of the coop for them, sometimes they'll roost on that during the day...
Apologies for the poor photo quality, i had to take it in the dark with a cell phone, but it should give you the idea. We have these old metal nesting boxes we hung on the wall for them. About half them sleep on the perch at the front of the boxes, the others like to climb into the boxes to...
Trying to get this setup myself but I'm not understanding the wiring. Why do you need 2 AC adapters? When the antenna is connected to the car it's connected to a single power source (the battery), when you turn the key on, the antenna goes up, when you turn the key off, the antenna goes down...
Sure.
Just a fence I can easily pull either down or across, doesn't need to protect against predators as the barn already does that, it's mainly a 'deflector shield' to keep them in their area. The gap is roughly 12 ft wide x about 8 ft high, wide open. I was sorta thinking of a 'shower...
Our chickens are in a converted horse stall (hardware clothed in to keep em in place) in a barn. I plan to free range em starting soon so I want to let them out of their coop and have a chicken door they can go out into the yard thru. The only thing is, I need to close off a section so that when...
Hope you don't mind if I piggy back on your post but I had the exact same question. We've had our chicks 4 1/2 weeks and they were about a week old when we got them so they should be approx 5 1/2 weeks now. They aren't full feathered yet but they're getting close. I think they might be getting...
