Skinny hen unwell, no other symptoms

Thank you for that link, it was a great read. She doesn't seem to have sour crop or impacted crop, although I tried treating for both just in case. I think she's probably got a pendulous crop (or some other growth or something) that's preventing her crop from functioning correctly. Unfortunately...

Skinny hen unwell, no other symptoms

Thank you! I think you're right about her crop. I checked her before she was up and eating this morning and it was still pretty full of food :( It's not hard, still soft and malleable, but it must be the root of her problems. The hens do always have granite grit and oyster shell available, so...

Skinny hen unwell, no other symptoms

I have a 3.5 year old Easter Egger hen that's not well. It's winter weather here (upstate NY) and she stopped laying at the end of summer when she began molting. Her feathers are in beautiful condition. When I checked on the hens today, she had her wings and tail dropped and she was lethargic. I...

How long to see improvement in hen with swollen eye treated with antibiotics?

Update: her eye is looking a little bit better this evening (of day 3) and she's acting a little more alert. I was probably just being impatient and the antibiotics needed longer to work. Fingers crossed she makes a full recovery.

How long to see improvement in hen with swollen eye treated with antibiotics?

Unfortunately not. None of my local vets treat poultry. I'd have to travel a couple hours to get to the vets at the state extension University.

How long to see improvement in hen with swollen eye treated with antibiotics?

I have a hen with one swollen eye. First it was bubbly one afternoon, then it swelled shut the next morning. It isn't pus-filled or smelly. There isn't any discharge from her nostrils. She isn't sneezing or gasping. She is eating and drinking, but is more lethargic than usual. Her poops look...

    Nest box pad suggestions?

Sand is a good idea. Maybe if I use it in combination with the plastic shoemat thing they won't be able to scratch down to the hard wood.

    Nest box pad suggestions?

Yep. They're weirdos. They've eaten feedbags too. Once I used one on the outside of their run as a temporary tarp while I was fixing something. They pulled it through the 1/2" hardware cloth fence and ate it. They get plenty of healthy feed and goodies and daily free range time. No idea why...

    Nest box pad suggestions?

3 are new layers (started in January), and 3 are going on 2 years old. One young one is most definitely an "over-preparer", but they all seem to eat & play with the nest pads. I don't have a pic handy, but the nest boxes are 14" cubes that have a 3" lip on the front. They have pine shavings in...

    Nest box pad suggestions?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a nest box pad for hens that eat everything and dig to the hard bottom of the box every time they lay? I've tried astroturf (they ate it), I've tried the natural shredded wood pads (they ate it and pulled it out), I've tried regular pine shavings (they kick it...

Post Your First Egg Pics-Part 2

It's probably an individual personality thing, but my barred rock squats for me all the time.

    Toys in the coop

I have lots of "stuff" for my ladies to climb on, logs, ladder, big branch that fell off a tree last summer, etc. Every so often I move the stuff around to make it new & interesting again. I have a wiffle ball in there too that they like to peck around 🤷‍♀️ I also hang a suet type cage feeder...

Pullet trying to cuddle underneath hens at bedtime. They are not amused.

This might be it. She seems like she doesn't want to be on the end/outside of the group, and wants to be in the middle, but can't figure out how to get in there. And nobody really wants to let her in since she's at the bottom of the pecking order. Oh well. Sounds like they'll eventually work it out.

Pullet trying to cuddle underneath hens at bedtime. They are not amused.

She was choosing a low nest box when she was being kicked off, but since I've been blocking them off at night she's been able to settle on the roost.
