Help! Hen suddenly lost a bunch of neck feathers!

My hen, Mulva (name from Seinfeld), is about 11 months old. When I went to let our five chickens on their daily "walk" around our yard (we let them out of their run to explore and give them treats for about a half an hour a day if we can) I immediately noticed that she had a bald spot that was...

Chicken Proof Run-- Have We Made a Mistake??????

Midwest. We don’t have many foxes, snakes or weasels, but hawks are a big problem, and we have a few dogs, cat, raccoons.

Chicken Proof Run-- Have We Made a Mistake??????

Thank you for your response. I have heard this about the snakes, of which I never never caught one glimpse of in my yard, same for weasels and minks, but those are quite the tricky critters!

Chicken Proof Run-- Have We Made a Mistake??????

Yes, I have a pop door atm, that slides back and forth with handles. Pretty basic, so to keep smart critters like raccoons out we put a plastic stick in the door ridge (like inside a home with glass sliding doors) to make double sure the door won't be opened by anyone but us.

Chicken Proof Run-- Have We Made a Mistake??????

Ah, I would like to say same for us, but I haven't had any experience with the predators around our area. I would assume, since we live in a suburb, they wouldn't be too bold, but you can never be to safe!

Awesome. Thank you. Do you have any suggestions of a good automatic locking chicken door?

Chicken Proof Run-- Have We Made a Mistake??????

So we have been working on a nice 84 sq feet chicken run for our 5 hens. Right now we are using those wimpy green posts and fencing with strawberry netting over the top to keep out a hawk that has taken to perching on the top of our coop once and a while. (we actually had a near loss, I was...

that’s a good idea, the skylight. or, since this might just be your broody coop, take a couple pieces of plywood and fashion a pointed roof with chicken wire on the sides of the point for ventilation... if that makes sense. also, electrolytes are amazing and work wonders!

Okay. Thankyou. Nonetheless, I am going to try to minimize the flies around our chicken run.
