    Hoover Hatchery questionable “silkie”

Photo taken today! This baby is front left and this "she" turned out to be a little MAN along with his three brooder mates :eek:But I live in the country and they have a forever home here...they are all fluffy, adorable, and sweet (to people if not always to each other) :love

Hen has bubbles in eye... best course of action?

Hi again, Her bubbly eye did seem to disappear for a couple of weeks, until she came back one evening with bubbles in the same eye PLUS open mouth breathing and occasional stridor. At that point I did start her on the enrofloxacin, and just completed a 5-day course. Her breathing has...

3 hens died over 2 1/2 years. Is this normal?

Heading into my seventh year of chicken keeping, I'm finding 1-2 deaths a year is the going rate, for any reason. Keep in mind that chickens have been bred first and foremost as food-producing animals and not as pets, so longevity is not within most hatcheries' concerns for an animal whose main...

Hen has bubbles in eye... best course of action?

Looking for the best course of action for treating Chippy. 1) What type of bird , age and weight almost 3 y.o. Easter egger hen, approx 7 lbs (normal weight) 2) What is the behavior, exactly. Bubbles noted in her left eye 3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? One day 4) Are other...

Into 2nd week of treatment for sour/doughy crop; next steps?

My local Walmart carried the papaya enzyme tablets. They smell nice and fruity so your hen might eat them willingly. I had crushed and mixed the tablets into my hen's feed but she preferred to eat the tablet straight 🤷‍♀️

Loose rooster spur: leave alone or remove?

Hi all....how would you treat a loose spur? I noticed my Silkie "Buttercup" limping today and saw that he had dried blood around the base of his right spur. It is wiggly (I gently manipulated it to check) but intact. It almost looks like the spur itself is cracked lengthwise but hard to tell...

Into 2nd week of treatment for sour/doughy crop; next steps?

Some good news to report...of course the morning after I wrote my long post...she exited the coop with an empty crop :wee For the previous 2-3 days I had only been treating with massage and half a papaya enzyme pill each day, and no free-ranging, just regular feed. I'm sure this molting...

Into 2nd week of treatment for sour/doughy crop; next steps?

I have an approx. 2-1/2 year old olive egger, Hershey. I had noticed her a couple weeks ago acting standoffish and discovered her large, squishy crop, which did not empty overnight. Her poop was mostly liquid. With crop manipulation, I could hear popping/bubbles in the crop and she had smelly...

    Hoover Hatchery questionable “silkie”

Ok…first of all, don’t buy silkies from Hoover because they don’t seem to be at all “correct”. Granted, I impulse bought 4 chicks from my local Runnings and I only want them as pets, but c’mon… At six weeks…Three are mostly silkie-like. One has four toes, two have straight combs coming in, one...

Does anybody have Americanas/easter eggers from Mt. Healthy?

I have three “Americana” EEs from Mt. Healthy. They have been healthy and great layers (two lay medium size blue eggs and one lays large light tan eggs). They are a little flighty but friendly enough. Not cuddlers tho. Definitely not the smartest birds either but super cute 😊

Salpingitis/lash egg in 3 y.o. hen; comfort measures?

I've cut back significantly on treats in recent months, but not entirely. They get layer feed and all flock feed, but I do give them a handful of scratch when they need to get inside their pens, plus the occasional apple core or wilted grapes and whatever they scavenge while free-ranging. My...

Salpingitis/lash egg in 3 y.o. hen; comfort measures?

From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows...I had just returned a recovered hen (prolapse) to the flock then I noticed this girl slowing down and looking ill...she is a 3 y.o. Amberlink who hasn't laid since December. In the last 1-2 weeks she has become sluggish, slightly penguin-stanced...

Hen prolapse: Does this look like improvement?

Thought I'd follow up, my hen has finally recovered from the prolapse, after two full weeks of care. After the crust came off and after a good bath, I tried pushing the tissue back in and it stayed about 80% in?! I returned her to her crate for a couple hours, then gave her a couple hours...

Hen prolapse: Does this look like improvement?

Thank you for your words of encouragement. She has really been pretty perky, you'd never know she was ill until she turns around and her rear end looks like a disaster. She got a little free range time today, and now thinks her crate in the garage is her new personal coop to return to. She only...

Hen prolapse: Does this look like improvement?

Hi, I am dealing with my first prolapse, and thanks to the post by @azygous I have a sensible protocol that I have been following...I just don't know if it's working and am getting discouraged. I have a ~4 year old hen who has not laid in well over a year present me with this prolapse 9 days...
