All three hens stopped laying for at least 3 days. I knew that the fourth hen was weak and tired,old and struggling but I did not know how close she was to death. They obviously knew.

Recently experienced in my small flock: empathy. 3 hens actually stopped laying days before one old “mother hen” died.

Wow! I am not sure which hen was responsible for laying it. I wonder if it will ever happen again. I wonder if it happens more often then we know. I found it broken so I saw it, but she could lay a double shelled egg and we crack it open into a pan and don't realize it.
The photo is really not reflective of what it looked like when I found it. The outside shell really did cover a lot of it. I should have been more careful when I washed it. The outer shell started to break away as the water hit it.
When I found the egg it was almost fully covered but cracked. I brought it in to wash it and it lost some of the outside shell. I wonder if the hen was disturbed by our dog while laying it. When I brought it inside to show my son he said to me. "I bet Kirby broke it. He just ran out of the coop"...
