This pic was taken in January at the vet. At 10 months old Solomon weighed 135 pounds. His mother weighs 155 and his father weighs 170. For comparison, I'm 5'4" and 125 pounds. He is the sweetest dog I have ever had!!
Waiting is such a drag! Many of mine are going through a molt, so even the ones that were laying (older girls I bought because I was impatient waiting for my original chicks to get old enough, lol) stopped laying. But there is hope! Some of my original girls have started to lay in the last...
Yay! I have been getting eggs from some of my hens (I bought some layers because I got impatient waiting for my babies to grow up).
But today two of my girls laid their first eggs!
My EE layer is the most consistent layer I have right now. The other three eggs (from left to right) are from a...
My hens (the seven that were laying) took a molt break. My EE got back on track a couple of weeks ago, but noone else. I have 20 hens total, 13 of them were too young to lay yet, but I was patiently waiting.
On Saturday one of the BS finally laid again (32 weeks old).
Today two of my young girls...

I'm hoping the cooler weather will coax them back into laying. The younger girls should start laying in the next few...

I worked on UCF's Marine Turtle Research team when I was in school. We started seeing more and more nests being scavenged. We found out that a well meaning man had been trapping raccoons on his property and relocating them in Sebastian...
Zazouse: Gracie is awesome!
We are on 10 acres in west Florida. I have lost a chick to a hawk. We saw the hawk return and try the same trick. I fortified the coop to thwart it's efforts. It has returned, but no more losses, thankfully.
I prefer not to kill anything. However, I also...
That is exactly how I justify checking the coops several times a day! I want to know who is laying, so I must keep an eye on them, right?
I knew I would enjoy having chickens, but I was very naive to the infectious contagion I was exposing myself to!
I love it!
Right now I have 7 layers: 2...
