Hi there,
I have three 4-6 month old Orpington pullets, haven't started laying yet. I had 4 but one turned out to be a roo that I sold last week. Since selling the roo, my hens (who used to spend all day in the run, napping under the coop) now won't leave the coop! Even when I tempt them out...
Sure, but if I can resolve it, then great, if not then I can't bring a sustained problem to their doorsteps. My neighbours also have pets, it's just not worth the risk.
Thanks everyone!
Unfortunately I really don't want to use poison, too high a risk of one of my dogs finding a dead poisoned rat and poisoning themselves by eating it!
I'll do my best to rat proof the coop, no chance of that with the run - it's too large to wrap the whole thing in 1/4" hardware...
Hi there,
I have an suburban coop with 4 hens. I've had them for about 6 weeks now and it's been great, EXCEPT FOR THE RATS!
I've caught sight of one or two over the last couple of weeks in the yard, and had no luck with snap traps, glue traps, zapper traps. Can't use poison here due to all...
Yep, I can probably find wood chips through a tree service, but the aging is the issue - need something now, and don't have a whole lot of storage space. :/ I assume it has to age for a year or so to work well?
Thanks everyone! I'm not sure I can find a source of aged woodchips... Would pine mulch do the trick? Most of the garden centers around here have that in bulk.
Ah, that makes sense! So if the deep litter gets rained on, that's ok? I always though cold compost had to be kept pretty even keel (not too dry, not too wet).
I live in the northeast, so cold snowy winters, hot summers, good amount of rain.
I definitely have plenty of leaf litter, straw...
Hi everyone!
New to the group and have been browsing for a while! We just built our coop a couple of months ago. We live in an suburban setting and so must follow a few bylaws to keep hens but we're able to do so! That being said, we have close neighbors and want to do our best to minimize the...
