    Hawks

    I just had a red tailed hawk take a second chicken in a two weeks. I don't have a rooster and wouldn't like to get one-due to close neighbors. Anyone have any ideas of ways to keep the hawk away while keeping my run open? Any breeds of hens that I should add to my flock? Thanks

    I run chickens in a chicken tractor designed by Joel Salatin. When I needed to integrate new chickens into my flock, I put them in the chicken tractor in the fence in the pen and slowly introduced them full time. They still have a definite pecking order, but it's a hard life out there for a chicken!

    If she is eating her own eggs possibly, I would add oyster shells or put your own egg shells(finely crushed) in with the feed. They may believe they are calcium deficient, and trying to get calcium from their own eggs-not good.

    I just started with four rir and added six ransoms with them just about when my rir were about 20 weeks old. Since then, my rir have all started laying and only some of my ransoms have started laying. It have also read that if it is extremely hot outside, they may delay and slow egg production...
