As a newbie, I'm keeping a note here for myself for reference. I haven't worked out where to share this info in the forums.
I started with 14 eggs. 1 cracked pre incubation. 13 were placed in a cool airy room for 24-hours and tilted ×4 before day Zero. Egg colours vary ×10 were cream with dark mottled spots. 3 were whiter with blueish spots. I tried candling the eggs using the Incubator candler and mobile torch but no joy on days 5, 8, 12 & 14. Maybe not an essential task? .
Day 19
7/13 have hatched. No signs of dodgy feet (?anti-slip mat + humidity from 1-14 <40% ? helping ).
1 incubating still, 6 brooding contentedly. A few flaps of a few wings today. Keen foragers with DL.
Eating = ultra fine 26% protein Massey chick crumb with ACS.
Water = pre-boiled + good ole Scottish tap water + snifter of ACV.
Incubator has been opened on occassion to remove dried chicks and used eggs. So far so good.
Bella likes a bath. Caused mayhem yesterday bc she was in it and the others weren't. More birds bathing today. Bella continues to enjoy an evening dust bath.
Essential equipment:
Patience
Heat sourceS
Wallpaper scrapper
Anti-drown water system
Dual temp gauge and hygrometer
Multiple feeders and water dispensers keptbirdregisterdotservicedotgovdotscot
Observations:
They keep each other right. They flock in small groups. Adorable chirps when birds are separated in the incubator and brooder. Respond to human chirps and finger tapping (I'm a mammy bird). Eating, drinking and pooing well. Seen to be taking short naps.
DLS is encouraging foraging. No slipping or sliding. No leg or foot damage evident. Spot cleaning regularly.
