Sylvia and Posey are definitely girls. Nanette’s coloring is very light for a female barred rock. I don’t see any saddle feathers but I’d bet they will come in soon. I think Nanette is a Nathan! As for Indy, I can’t tell yet but leaning toward hen.
This is a very old thread but I am having the same problem with one of my color pack hens. When she was a pullet she had a bad case of coccidosis and I am wondering if this is the cause. She also lays gigantic, jumbo eggs. Were you ever able to identify the hen that laid your “defective eggs?”...
I am having the same issue with Poppy, my Black Australorp. I had two other hens loose feathers around their vent back in September. I suspected mites or lice but after scrutinizing each hen, coop and run I could find no evidence. I treated the coop and each hen regardless. The other hens ended...
Thats probably the case LOL. I can't really walk into it, I can reach in through some access doors to their favorite spots to collect eggs. It's just a pain.
I am trying to figure out why half of my ladies are no longer using their box and instead lay on the coop floor underneath the box. Here are my thoughts:
1. Bully hen wont let others inside?
2. The box is too cold with the change in seasons? We have a Best Nest rollaway box and its metal. It has...
I have a few hens who still lay on the ground. I've found its because if my top hen is in the boxes trying to lay she shrieks at the others to go away.
I also live near Portland and had to evacuate from the fires. My chickens laid through the smoke but for the last two days egg production is way down. Yesterday I got 3 eggs from 9 hens. Autumn is here and daylight hours are shortening. I wonder if the smoke just accelerated the natural break...
I considered this but I've never witnessed any other hens pecking. I have 3 younger pullets that do their own thing and are quite skittish of my older 9 girls. The 9 hens get along great from what I can tell. Maybe I need to install a coop cam :D
I have a speckled sussex who had been losing feathers close to her vent for the past month. At that time I thought it was related to my roo over-mating with her as I didn't see any evidence of lice or mites. Well, rooster is gone and now 2 other birds have missing feathers around their vent. I...
So far I don’t hate any of the breeds I’ve had. I will say Cuckoo Marans are the closest I’ve had to dislike. I got 2 marans chicks along with 2 color packs in June. One of the Cuckoo’s was a cannibal. She had crazy eyes too. I tried everything to break the habit but was unsuccessful. We ended...
I intended on keeping our Rhode Isand Red boy but at 24 weeks he attacked my 2 y/o daughter. Thankfully his spurs weren’t fully developed or it could have been bad. My 5 year old daughter was disappointed that we didn’t eat him and instead gave him to another home 😆
We have 12 pullets and 1 rooster. 9 of them are new layers and 3 of them won’t lay until October or so.
My husband and I got in a disagreement, he said “what will you do when you start to get 12 eggs a day?” I snubbed him and said it would never happen. We’ve been getting 2-3 eggs a day for the...
I had a dream I got a blue egg the night before I found my first egg. Not blue since the only possible blue egg would come from my color packs who were only 8-9 weeks at the time LOL. Maybe your dreams are on to something!!
