Here are a few more chicks from my first batch!
Please reference the Egg # in any comments. Ages are listed on each collage. Based on your previous help I'm thinking #9 and #18 are hens and #24 is a roo, but do black combs follow the same time table?
Egg #9
Egg #18
Egg #24
Ok! I see the pink comb for sure. Plus, it's much bigger than the other two I kept. Do you not look for pointy saddle or neck feathers at this stage? Maybe that's why I have always struggled to tell! 😄
With future batches I think I'll select and incubate the eggs, color code them with leg bands...
First Batch! (all barnyard mix)
This round has been all about working out the kinks in my process. Along with sexing, feel free to tell me what kind of photos are most helpful.
I previously read that wing feathers help to tell at younger ages, but I'm not sure on that. I wish I had better...
Hi! I am conducting experiments to determine which eggs will hatch hens (no need to convince me I'm crazy to try, I've already heard it 😜)
But I'm not the greatest at sexing pullets and cockerels. And until I have my own full flock of Beilefelders, or a source of auto-sex hatching eggs, I'll be...
So I'm still struggling with the one chicken (barred grey neck)... Here are some new pictures, can you point out what makes you say it's a rooster?
I don't see pin feathers at the neck as much as I do with this guy in front (who puffs up, ruffles his neck, and acts VERY roo)
And when I...
I'm gonna tag onto this post -- my new pullet has a similar hole, but it's fresher. I recently put everyone into the same coop, I've been letting them out into the grass often, and I've been watching closely, but this still happened.
My main question is would you do the same thing if the bully...
Well, at least I got the (mixed) breeds right!
I have a really hard time identifying roos early on... What about this second one makes you say roo? (I got better pics)
I just got these three chickens from my niece, whose class hatched them from a farm. I'd love to know breeds/genders (at least a general idea)
So far I'm thinking:
Red Sex Link Pullet
EE/Bielefelder cross Pullet
Bielefelder Cockerel
But maybe that's just wishful thinking? I've been wanting to...
I've just been filling a one quart waterer daily, and it seems to be working out just right. No more gross poops and everyone was exceptionally energetic today! Thank you again!!
Thank you you Wyorp Rock! In all my years of raising chickens I have never seen anything like this before. They now have treated water and hopefully everyone does just fine! I have a 3 quart waterer that usually lasts a few days - should I still make a new mix with the liquid each day?
Hoping to revive this post for a similar situation...
I have 4wk old chicks of various breeds that were hatched and brooded together by a neighbor (plus ONE a few days younger that we managed to hatch 😂) As a note, a few days ago we turned an old water trough/duck pond into a bigger brooder...
