Had a downpour come on quick today. Three week old chicks got soaking wet. They don't seem to be doing well. The power is out due to the storm so I can't blow-dry them or put them under the warmer. We've rubbed them down as best we could. There's about18 of them. Any suggestions?
They were put together when the chicks were about a month old. They never paid much attention to each other. Of course things could have changed.
Might will just have to keep an eye out.
Will a hawk kill with no open wounds. And then not take the bird with them?
I'm having a horrible chicken day...
Had to end the suffering of a meatie first thing this morning. A broken leg that came clean off the bone. Not the first one in the past week, I might add.
Then this afternoon I went to check on the hens and one of my three month old hens was dead. I inspected...
They don't have a roost And I looked for a point of entry for rats or critters.
So the blood pooling under the skin must be a break. Then in a day or two the skin opens.
That's the only thing I can think.
Kind of a bummer because they only got to about six weeks. And they didn't get as big as...

The crops seem a bit smaller this morning. I might try some fermented feed though.
Thanks for all your replies! I may have just needed some reassurance that there wasn't something else going on.
I have 20 Cornish Cross at a week old. Quite a few of them have very distended crops. My research tells me it is expected. But some of these seem VERY big. I have a few questions-hopefully someone can help.
At a week old is it wise to go to 12 hour feedings rather than a 24 hour all they can eat...
I'm not sure what breed. I have one just like it. He/She is big! I will be disappointed if mine is a Cornish Cross. I got it from the layer-pullets bin at Tractor Supply. Of course I know that's never reliable.
I picked up chicks at Ideal today. At the office. They had a can of Lysol to spray your shoes with if you went to the back where chicks are. Just regular Lysol.
