😂 I am also STUPID and realized in my middle of the night baby wake up call haze I wrote western and not eastern NY. If that changes anything for you, I have 1 lavender left that would love a new home! Haha
Hey everyone! I’d love to see some of your svart hona crosses, intentional or unintentional! I just hatched 7 chicks and have been really into seeing cross breeds. I do know the the fibro gene presenting itself isn’t guaranteed which is part of what makes seeing all the possibilities so fun. Share!
I have 2 Swedish flower and 3 lavender orpington roosters available. They are all 13-14 weeks old. 10$ for the lavenders, 15 for the flowers. Located in Columbia County NY
Hey everyone! I’m in eastern NY along the MA border and joined BYC when I started hatching and keeping coturnix almost 3 years ago. This past Spring I started keeping chickens (it began with chicks from tractor supply and now I have 21 more (lavender orpingtons, Swedish flowers and svart honas)...
hi all! I hatched my second set of coturnix on June 10th and 11th and ended up with 5 perfect little guys and one that became cross legged as it grew. Not sure if I will cull that one yet as it seems ok for now. The weirdest thing is that it’s July 2nd, and I found an egg with them- they’re 3...
That’s true and good to know. Thankfully this morning her beak was scabbed over. I let her out of the carrier and she’s acting normal, albeit a bit sluggish. I observed her eating too :) there she is just as she pulled her head out of the feeder.
I tried some styptic powder (would not recommend as she licked at it, not sure it’s safe for ingestion) and did have her take a few licks of nutri drench as well as added to the water. Last time I picked her up she was a bit more feisty so I’m hoping for the best. The cat carrier is now in the...
hi all,
I went to do my morning rounds in the pen and found one of my silvers bloody. It’s as if her beak has had the “shell” broken off of it. I can’t figure out how this could have happened and the other three with her have not been aggressive and have no blood on them. I have her in a cat...
Updates for any others in a similar situation who just didn’t expect winter weather to persist this hard when hatching- lol- it was 20 degrees when I woke up (and likely in the teens overnight) and all 4 of my birds I have loose in the run were out foraging in the leaves and outside the shelter...
Thanks for th reassurance! I hear both ends of the spectrum- they need to acclimate or they’ll be fine. I think the fact they’re choosing to be out in the breeze speaks for itself :) all 6 are out now so not much I can do about that anyway!
Hello everyone! So we recently finished building a quail run/coop after being buried for a month under tons of snow in east/central NYS. We had a couple nice days in February where we got the frame and roof on plus a bit of the hardware cloth before getting hammered with 3 nor’easters. I finally...
Update (will likely be the final update for anyone that stumbles across this)
I started with 15 eggs- 3 did not develop past the 10-12 day mark, 10 out of 15 eggs pipped externally. 2 more May hatch so I’m leaving them. At least 3 did not pip their air cells and were in breech. I ended up...
So the third chick had what I thought was a slipped tendon, but I cannot feasibly figure out now to straighten the leg- the joint is very rigid. Can anyone tell me if this might be a deformity that just can’t be corrected? I also realize auto correct screwed up my subject line- so hopefully more...
The first two popped out almost instantly- no slow zipping like I’ve seen others describe. Literally out within 30-45 minutes of first external pip.
I noticed another had pipped at the small end of the egg- one of the eggs I couldn’t candle. He’s been poking out of the same hole now for a few...
