Strange thing in the nesting box

I found this in a nesting box today. It's roughly about as long as an egg, and is kind of rubbery. It seems like I remember seeing something about this years ago, but can't find it now. I'm guessing it's a "misfire" of the hen's reproductive tract, but... Anyone know what it is, what might...

Ended Coop Page Contest #6 - Win a $50 BYC Store Gift Certificate!

Thanks, Sumi, and to all the wonderful folks at BYC! I had a fun time documenting my coop build, and I'll be adding a little more to it (last week I built a shade/rain roof over the run area).

Thanks, Biddiquack! Sometimes I just throw things together in a haphazard fashion, other times I go overboard. This time I think I went 6 fathoms deep... :-)

    Handling chicks

Regarding diseases and transmission, certainly birds can catch diseases from humans and other animals, and vice versa. Have you ever heard of "bird flu?" It's one of the most virulent and deadly forms of the flu. Why do you think it's called BIRD flu? That said, there's no reason to live...

Okay, the coop and the page are sufficiently done for entering it. I didn't create a page on the coop pages, as I'd already created a "member page" 6-7 weeks ago. The page is at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/first-a-beekeeper-now-a-chickenkeeper

The run is much further along now, with mostly small details left on it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/first-a-beekeeper-now-a-chickenkeeper

Does it have to be a newly created page, or can a member page that's already created be use? I started my coop about 6 weeks ago, and have been building a member page detailing the construction as I go. With just a few tweeks, it would satisfy most of the requirements for your contest...

The coop itself is almost done (other than outdoor "finish work" and painting). Latest job completed: the pop-door. The whole story and more pictures at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/first-a-beekeeper-now-a-chickenkeeper

Thanks, aart! Yes, I'll keep announcing updates here (maybe not with EVERY update, but every 1-3, depending upon significance). Just updated it for today with doors, doors, doors: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/first-a-beekeeper-now-a-chickenkeeper

    Future home of young dinosaurs

I started my coop about three weeks ago (seems longer than that) after thinking a long time about keeping chickens. You can see lots of pictures of the design and building process and read about the progress here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/first-a-beekeeper-now-a-chickenkeeper...

    Bedding

Gecko Chick: I'm admittedly a newbie myself, so I can't speak from experience. But from everything I've read, the deep litter method can be used regardless of how slow or fast the chicken poop builds up. The only difference is how often you have to add more 'bedding' and how soon you have to...

re: Cedar Think about "cedar chests" or "hope chests," which are always lined with cedar. The reason they do that is cedar contains substances that are toxic, and the fumes keep bugs out, thus protecting any materials you store in the cedar chest. Will it kill your chickens? Maybe, maybe...
