    Favorite thing YOUR chickens do!

I find it hilarious when Gregory Peck, our roo, picks up food and calls all of the ladies to come over from every corner of the yard and enjoy some food and then he quickly gobbles it all up without giving them any! He thinks he's so funny :)

Also, my little Pekin would thank you for the compliments! She's the most gorgeous little thing, such a sweet heart and a great mother :)

Boys or girls? Wyandotte x Australorps

Zip ties are a great idea! I will have to get some for our next lot. Also, the farmer we got the eggs from was hoping we might have a girl in here because ALL the eggs she has hatched from this rooster have been boys! Could it be something genetic?? Sigh. I was hoping for at least one little...

Boys or girls? Wyandotte x Australorps

Hello everyone! I recently had a couple of broods hatch out a couple of weeks apart and am now starting to wonder which ones are boys and which ones are girls. Actually I'm losing my mind trying to keep track of who is who and can only really tell them apart by which foster mother each brood...

    Sick chicken! Urgent, please help!

Thank you all so much for your support and advice! We had to put the poor little thing down yesterday. I had a long conversation with a family friend who is a large-animal vet and has kept chickens for almost 40 years and we both agreed that the symptoms were looking more and more like Marek's...

    Sick chicken! Urgent, please help!

Thank you so much for your help, even if it doesn't narrow it down too much. It's so good to have people to talk about it as I don't really have that out here in the real world where no one I know keeps chooks! We didn't have Xrays sone so it could be something like that. She is very...

    Sick chicken! Urgent, please help!

Three days ago I came home from work to find our 5 month old silkie/polish bantam slumped on the ground in our back yard. She is very unwell. Symptoms: It started off with her head drooping forward and her keeping her wings slightly out from her sides and progressively got worse so that she...

Moving chooks to the new coop extension?

So I have a little backyard flock of mixed breeds who free range during the day and nest at night in a secure coop. The coop was getting a bit small for them all so I spent 15 back breaking hours building a coop extension for my five lovely ladies. Two weeks later they still aren't using it! I...

Our Welsummer's first egg! ...and a bit of a surprise...

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me! I had one of her eggs for breakfast this morning and you know what, I don't think I care about the colour anymore, it was delicious!!

Our Welsummer's first egg! ...and a bit of a surprise...

Ooooo! It looks like she might be a welsummer! Here is a pic I took this arvo of the two eggs side by side - the one on the left is the first egg she laid yesterday, and the one on the right is the egg she laid today... see the speckles? Could that be her 'ink jets' adjusting themselves?

Our Welsummer's first egg! ...and a bit of a surprise...

So here is a better photo of her head - do her earlobes look white enough for her to be a brown leghorn? In other news, she's making a fuss about laying again right now so we'll see what colour this one comes out! Any bets? :)

Our Welsummer's first egg! ...and a bit of a surprise...

So we have been hanging out for our 27 week old welsummer to start laying (it is mid-winter here so we weren't too worried) and finally today, after A LOT of fuss she finally laid! The weirdest part... her egg is completely white. I'm quite confused. She looks like a purebred and came from a guy...

Introducing chicks to the adult flock's sleeping quarters. Advice?

Hi everyone, I've recently been rasing a couple of chicks with a broody hen. The chicks and the hen spend their days freeranging with the adults but return to their seperate quarters at night. The chicks are now 6 weeks old and big enough to climb the ramp into the coop, and I want my garden...
