    Marek’s and future chickens

Posting the pictures of the ocular one here as well, along with an update. This particular one doesn’t seem to be worsening so I hope it will stay that way at least for a while. On the other hand I had to euthanize another hen (black marans) who out of nowhere developed symptoms like the...

    Marek’s in the flock

Hard to capture a good picture of my chickens eyes but this one clearly shows a difference between the good eye and the cloudy one. However she has been doing well so far, laying, eating, and the healthy eye is still ok so I hope it continues. On the other hand I made a difficult decision to...

Breeds surviving vs succumbing to Marek’s

Glad I discovered this thread as I’ve been dealing with Marek’s in my flock of 5: 3 years old and all vaccinated. My lavender Orpington was the first one to become paralyzed and as I had her euthanized, the necropsy confirmed Marek’s. My cream legbar has a grey eye/diluted pupil pointing to...

    Marek’s and future chickens

Thank you so much, so many interesting points and knowledge. Very interesting to read about that 5 mile radius, we certainly have many backyard chickens owners in our area.

    Marek’s and future chickens

I did get the final report and yes Marek’s was confirmed for that one. I will try to take a better picture of the eye but I am 99% sure it’s that; visibly blurry pupil and greyish color and she appears to be blind in that eye. Otherwise she’s doing well though, laying and eating and the other...

    Marek’s and future chickens

If you had Marek’s in your flock, did you wait for all of them to die before getting new chickens? I have a small flock of now 4 (originally 5), 3 years old, one of them became paralyzed and necropsy pointed to Marek’s. Another one has developed ocular Marek’s in one eye though is otherwise...

    Black marans stopped laying early

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I will try calcium and worming and see what happens. Definitely a bummer, her eggs were gorgeous.

    Black marans stopped laying early

My small flock (4 chickens) is about to turn 3 years old. All 3 are still laying (though of course a little less than last year) but my black marans stopped laying entirely last summer when she was barely 2.5 years old. Is that normal for the breed or some chickens in general? After this winter...

    Marek’s in the flock

Hmm interesting. Is there any info on recommended dosing? I read the thread about the skullcap as well.

    Is this Marek's?

Similar happened to one of mine - she started limping at first and falling over, she was still eating but lost a lot of weight. Vet ruled out injuries or bumble foot, she seemed to be in discomfort and I ended up euthanizing. Necropsy points to Marek’s unfortunately and now another chicken of...

    Marek’s in the flock

That’s good to know! She’s such a sweet one I hope she can live comfortably. My other one was in discomfort getting paralyzed. I guess now the main thing is to not get any more chickens until all my current ones die and the whole area is sanitized.

    Marek’s in the flock

Yeah it was hard to get a good picture, but it is visibly different/cloudy and similar to what I’ve seen online about Marek’s. I contacted the pathologist working on the case of my other chicken and he said to wait til the final report is done. I suppose, if it is indeed Marek’s, how can I tell...

    Marek’s in the flock

And she wouldn’t stand still from this side but picture of the cloudy eye…it is visibly different from the other one

    Marek’s in the flock

Thank you so much. I haven’t introduced any new chickens so I’d assume it would be from wild birds, just surprised to be seeing this now. They’ve always looked healthy and otherwise well. I will be receiving the final necropsy report as well but the preliminary one found tumors and strongly...
