I've thought about a chickshaw. This was quicker, easier, and cheaper to build. I could get electric netting and may one day. Our front yard, where I'm keeping these boys, is very open though and I worry about hawks. But, the chickshaw has definitely advantages and I may well build one someday.

Thanks, this was very informative. I wound up building an 8x8 Salatin type tractor. The cockerels seem ok in there. They peck and squawk a bit, but it's nothing like the chaos of when they were in with the pullets. In my location, a taller style with a roosting bar is favored to protect from...
That one looks a *lot* like my Bielefelder. I don't have a pic handy, but they're definitely a match. The one I can't identify is pictured below. His neck matches a Bielefelder, but see that red and the different tail color? And he's significantly smaller than the Bielefelder. Maybe some sort of...
Thanks, I've got a Bielefelder. He's significantly larger and never developed the red feathering. They looked quite similar at eight weeks. Did you see the pics I posted a few weeks later?
I got one egg out of fifteen hens today. I'm happy with that though because they're 18 weeks, it's the second egg I've seen, and the green beaut is the first the pullet in question has laid.
Both birds are 18 weeks old and from an assortment from Meyer Hatchery.
Chicken 1. Looks like a Lavender Orpington Cockerel? If so, am I correct in thinking that he's not a particularly fine specimen? His feathering just doesn't seem that impressive and he's kinda lazy. Saw a couple cockerels...
Patrol the area regularly to get your scent all over the ground. It won't stop every predator, but it can make them think twice. Consider getting a dog, though you'll have another animal to feed and you'll need to train it to leave your chickens alone.
Finally, I'd shoot the bobcat and then...
This video gives some information on getting plants to grow inside a chicken run.
I'm also considering planting some vines and/or brambles just outside the run. If they're close enough that the chickens can reach through the welded wire fence, I can put up a piece of hardware cloth to hold...
Dogs can get through hardware cloth if they can get a tooth in. If you install hardware cloth and something seems to be damaging it, definitely reinforce with welded or woven wire.
The comb and wattle went from resembling those of the other two pullets to larger and redder very quickly. I first noticed this one was developing less than a week ago.
On Chicken A, I definitely see what you're saying. Cream Legbar. He tread on a pullet this afternoon. She wasn't too thrilled with it. Hopefully, he learns some manners.
Good to know on Chicken B. I'll keep an eye on that one. Might have to call Meyer. This would be a precocious pullet for...
All my chickens are 15 weeks old from Meyer Hatchery.
Chicken A. Definitely a cockerel. But what breed? The barred pattern seems pretty common. I would say he's mid-sized among the birds I've got. And it doesn't show well in the picture, but his ears have a definite green hue to them.
Chicken...
