Great idea; I usually give them a mixture of canned dog food, yogurt, cottage cheese and apple sauce once or twice a week. I will do it more often and see if that helps. Will also check to see if they have any blood sucker signs. Thanks so much for your help.
We just lost one chicken that became weaker and weaker and her comb got lighter in color. She died and now we have another one that is showing signs of her comb getting lighter in color and I would like to do what I can to make her better.
Three years ago we got 6 baby chicks from Tractor...
I will give the Flock Raiser a try. I used to use it for our ducks but have only used the Layena for the laying chickens. Now that I think of it, there was nothing stronger than the duck egg shells!
Thank you for that input....they are just a little over two years old, is that considered "older"? Their eggs have increased in size since they started laying but they are so big now they won't fit in "Large" egg containers.
I'm back and still having the same problem with weak shells. I have 9 chickens with 6 being the younger, more productive egg layers but several are laying huge eggs, Jumbo; XXJumbo and even XXXJumbo. I am feeding Purina Layena crumbles with oyster shell available at all times plus they are...
I have done some research and it appears that Pacific Pearl oyster shell is not available in my area. I do feed Purina's Layena which is supposedly fortified with oyster shell calcium but it has not helped my girls. It is why I keep thinking there is something I am feeding or in our...
I will have to check the brand of my oyster shell tomorrow. My girls seem to ignore it so it obviously is not something they seek out.
Funny you mentioned canned Mackerel; I give it to my raw fed dogs twice a week so I always have it on hand. How much do you give your girls and do you use the...
Thank you Paula. I do mostly feed them all the goodies in the morning....perhaps a time change would make a difference. I will try that starting tomorrow.
I'll let you know in about two weeks or so. Thanks again!
Mine dove into scraps and goodies from the beginning and have not let up. They love the ends I trim off strawberries; watermelon is a big favorite as is cantaloupe. Broccoli is another but they don't much care for the peelings from Butternut squash but will eat the squash and its seeds...
Hi MasAhora,
Thank you for the reply, we also free range and it makes me feel so sorry for the chickens that are kept in commercial "coops" because they don't get the joys of foraging and scratching. I think I will look into the fermented feed, that might be a good change that might harden...
I am thoroughly enjoying this thread and feeling much better about what I give to my girls. We have 9 layers; two Barred Rock are 6 yrs old; one Americana is 5 yrs old; and six sex link are 2 yrs old....all laying.
A local "chicken lady" advised me to give some canned dog food (not chicken...
Thank you for the tip , I will try it next time but need to tell you I am not a whiz on these things.
The third chicken has died. I have a call into the State Agent but I did make it a point to feel their crops just now. Most of them are not as full and hard as usual. I don't know if that...
Wow, what great responses. I will answer the questions:
I know my state will necropsy because my now retired vet discovered bird flu in the state by sending in a dead bird he found on the highway. We have a U of Florida ag center 2 miles from here so I will contact them to learn what I have to...
The end of December I had a chicken (Sex Link; 3 years old) start acting sick. She kept her feathers puffed up and was lethargic. I isolated her but within 2-3 days she died on Jan 3rd. Then another started with the same symptoms and I treated her with antibiotics I had on hand added to her...
I agree with you. I have a small flock of 7 RR's 2 Barred Rock and 3 Ameraucanas. The RR's are the friendliest with one of them declaring herself my personal pet and she follows me wherever I go in the yard. She even comes running when I call her name. She "tells" me all the chicken yard...
