Looks like it has to come down to a shotgun. The fox got past my 8 ft hurricane fence that has 2 separate strands of electric fence, past the board I slid across the lower opening to the coop & got at least one chicken. (I found her dead this morning - he couldn't get her back past the fence.)...
A breeding pair moved into our area last week, got one before I knew it. Am keeping everyone completely locked up @ night, in an electric-fence protected zone during the day, but I know even that isn't fox-proof.
I have a live trap, but they haven't gone near it. Used live chicken (protected...
If you can't bring yourself to dispatch & have a river or lake nearby, you can also relocate them - I'd make sure it is somplace at least 10 + miles from your place so they can't find their way back.
Anyone know a feed mill around Sacramento? I have almost 100 chickens & $13 a bag is killing me. I can find feed mills for horse, sheep, cow feed, but no chicken. My chickens won't eat just scratch either. I've tried looking on websites, calling poulty places, no luck. Thanks!
Anyone know a way to keep hawks away? I just put 50 3-month old chickens in my large, uncovered area with my 30+ full sized chickens. (The big ones have been in the open area for over a year, no problem.) Late afternoon I heard the chickens going off, I ran down with my pellet gun & there...
Nothing worse than seeing your chicks gone -- I baited my trap with many things, but a chicken carcass was the only bait that caught anything. I found the raccoon in my area had a pattern - it hit my coop on Friday & Saturday night. If you don't catch it right away, make sure you have the trap...
My chickens will do the same thing, so I cut an old tomato cage that had small mesh (1 x 2 inch squares). It has really cut down on the amount they scrape onto the ground and they can get their heads in to eat just fine.
I sell eggs as well, I know some of my chicks (purchased) were vaccinated, those I hatched were not. I did feed medicated feed for the first month and everyone is just fine.
When I got certified to sell, neither the state nor the county asked if I had vaccinated, so if they don't ask, I...
I had 7 RIR's that hatched the day after Christmas. A week later, one chick's legs was bent funny & had hardened feces stuck to it's knee. I tried to clean it off, but it keptcoming back. A second chick's leg didn't seem to work right (one stuck forward, one back). I kept watch over the 2 -...
