Raising baby chicks in the winter?

Thats what I was afraid of. Right now, I don't really have any good way to run electricity to my coop. Would an extension cord and a heat lamp on a timer be enough?

Raising baby chicks in the winter?

So, my beautiful flock of 20 birds had an unfortunate run in with some dogs, and I only have two survivors. :( My husband and I would like to get some more chicks, but is it too late in the year? By the time they are 8 weeks old, it will be December. Our winters here in central Arkansas aren't...

First time hatching - help please!

Hi Freya, I would love to help, but this is my first time hatching under a broody hen too. I am getting worried about my hen. She has barely moved since we set her on the eggs, and they arent due to hatch til the 19th. Could she die sitting on the eggs?

Proud new mama to 8 baby chickens!

Thanks for the reply. I got some vitamin/electrolytes for their water, and some medicated starter feed. I keep hearing a lot about the Apple Cider Vinegar from others. How much do I put in their water, how often, and should I use that instead of the vitamins/electrolytes?

Proud new mama to 8 baby chickens!

My husband and I have just welcomed home our 8 new little fuzz-balls, and are very excited! We have never raised chickens before. My thought is as long as they have heat, shelter, feed and water, how hard can it be? Then I started reading a lot of the posts on here about chicks dying and...

New to Chickens in General - need some advice

My husband and I are new to chickens this year as well. We are going to buy 6 chicks from our local feed store at the end of this month, and a friend of my husband is going to give us a grown hen. Apparently his other chickens pick on her, so he said we can have her. I am loving all the great...
