There is definitely something about the little fluff balls! Every time I sell some girls or rehome a batch of roosters, I feel compelled to get the incubator out and go again.
So far, my birds are LOVING the fermented wheat. And I am already noticing how much less grain I'm feeding out everyday.
Having read a number of threads on backyard chickens about what a scourge raccoons are, I'm really rather glad we don't have to deal with them in Australia, the foxes alone are bad enough.
I think this is relevant enough: the myth being that if you have crows stealing eggs from the coop, shoot one and hang it near the doorway into the coop and all the other crows will be apparently be smart enough to stay away. I've seen a thread where some chicken keepers have tried the same...
Roxy and the babies are coming along nicely. Whenever I go outside, I can't help but go and check on them and half an hour later I'm still sitting there watching them.
On a more frustrating note, the other bantams are showing early signs of scaly leg mites. This has to be courtesy of all our...
Roxy has hatched 3 chicks 🥰. I put 5 faverolles eggs under her and I noticed Roxy rejected one of the eggs about a week ago. We moved her and the chicks this afternoon into an A-frame to keep them safe from the bully drakes, my toddlersaurus, the cat, foxes etc. My partner ended up putting on...
The cameras and thermometer are a great idea - I get up and go outside at least once every night in the early hours, usually because my dogs have started a ruckus and I feel compelled to go and check on everyone. A camera would make life a lot easier - definitely going to give that some thought...
Hooley Dooley, that does look cold! Do you provide the girls with any kind of heating? My partner adores Canada, but then most kiwis do! He'd love to go back with all of us, probably in the winter so we can go skiing.
I've a big job sanding all the wood back first, and then the real fun...
So a few months ago we built a run at this new place with the idea that the ducks and chickens could all free range during the day, and then head into the run at night. The coop is a 2-storey thing, with that coop we got from the French backpackers, sitting on stilts around which we attached...
Finally here are my odd bods bantams.
This is Roxy:
She is a fiesty little woman. She came to me as the mum of the ducklings I got last year. She hatched out seven ducklings and by the time they were 2 weeks old, none could fit under her but she was one fiercely protective mama; it was quite...
I think I will decorate the coop - and will definitely let my son help, as I doubt I could keep him away anyhow. The paint station at playgroup is where he spends almost all his time as he absolutely adores painting. What sort of paint did you use for your coop? I have a big tin of exterior...
Beautiful birds! Totally relate re not getting much done because I startwd taking photos of the birds and was enjoying watching them too much. And I like your saw horse - I nabbed my partner's rickety saw horse for the run but the sides aren't covered like yours, but I really like that idea.
