    Persistent pasty butt

Both times I ordered chicks, I had at least one or two who didn't recover from shipping stress as fast as the others, so I had to clean butts for a few days. I generally just make sure that I keep an eye on everyone and usually after about a week, they grow out of it.

Waiting out illness instead of culling...thoughts?

This is the toughest part about owning chickens, and I feel it's very much down to individual cases per chicken. I have had chickens for 6 years now, and have encountered many different ailments. I generally gauge them by behavior. For instance, I had a pullet this year that developed some sort...

Welsummer limping with bubbles on foot

That might possibly be Bumblefoot, an infection in her foot. Take a look at the bottom and see if there is a big black spot, like a scab.

    Choosing the correct food

I personally haven't gone into the science of chicken feed, but I can tell you how it goes down with my flock. My old ladies were on chick feed until 16 weeks, then I moved them onto Layer feed (this was per the bag's instruction). When I went to integrate new chicks in this spring, I had read...

    Naming chickens

All of the chickens, However, naming is purely based on if one comes to me (or someone else in the family) for the chicken. I had one Easter Egger who I finally named "Nameless" because she just didn't inspire anything. I have a four-year-old, and she has named some of the birds from this round...

    Recommendations for waters...

I have one of those basic, 2-gallon rubber feeder pans. The chickens CAN step in it, but rarely do. I fill it up every day with fresh water, and clean it when it looks like it needs it, which is a pretty easy wipe-out. Sometimes I even just grab a hangful of grass and give it a quick scrub and...

    What are Golden Comet Chickens?

I have a Golden Comet in my most recent group of chicks. Every group I try to get different breeds to see who I like. I can tell you that her personality is the best of them, but that will also make it pretty tough when she isn't expected to live very long. The gold coloring is also very pretty!

Unnamed Welsummers #1 and #2 #1 Week 2 #1 Week 8 #2 Week 2 #2 Week 8 Nothing much to report on these guys. One of them has a leg issue that I believe is a sprain, and I am doing my best to treat her so we shall see how that goes.

Speckled Sussexes #1 and #2 One will be named Rosemary and the other TBD. Waiting for adult molt to be able to tell them apart easier. #1 Week 2 #1 Week 9 #2 Week 2 #2 Week 9 These are my first Sussexes, and they are both very calm-natured birds. I really like the speckles.

Sunflower - Salmon Faverolles Week 2 Week 9 Sunflower is very much a hatchery-grade Faverolles, but still has that slightly quirky personality that I liked so much in Wrecking Ball. She does have some bent toes on her right foot that I will need to keep an eye on for nail trimming and such.

Silly Sylvia - Barred Plymouth Rock 2 Weeks 9 Weeks Also named by my daughter, who seems to be partial to alliterative names. I liked Nora so much that I decided I had to have another BPR. Sylvia is a bit flightier, but still pretty smart and occasionally tries to fly up and perch on us.

Pecky Becky - Easter Egger Week 2 Week 8 I was pretty sure she was going to be a sneaky rooster, but turns out she really is a pullet. Up until yesterday, she did not have a name. My four-year-old suddenly decided that her name should be Pecky Becky, and I couldn't not name her that.

Olive Eggers #1 and #2 #1 - Week 2 #1 - Week 9 #2 - Week 2 #2 - Week 9 These guys are both very "Help, there's a Murderer! I'm being MUUUURDERRED!" whenever I pick them up, so I have yet to decide on what sort of dramatic names that I want for them. I also need them to feather out a bit...

Luna - Black Star 2 Weeks 9 Weeks Luna is a pretty mellow chicken. I could tell her apart from her sister, Darkaness, by the white under her chin as a chick. As a pullet, she has less brown than her sister.

Little - Double Laced Barnevelder 2 Weeks 9 Weeks I was pretty sure that Little wasn't going to make it to adulthood. She had a rough time as a chick, and I thought was going to be a "failure to Thrive". She has pulled through, and you would never know now that she had any trouble at all...
